AMEA Power recently commissioned the Amunet wind farm that is now Africa’s largest operational wind farm. This major renewable energy endeavor is found in Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate. It was done 2.5 months early—proof of the company’s remarkable efficiency at rolling out complicated energy projects.
The Amunet wind farm contributes capacity of 500 megawatts (MW). It is a consortium, with AMEA Power holding a 60% stake and management in the hands of Sumitomo Corporation holding the other 40%. Through this partnership, they’ve opened a facility that produces an astounding 2,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity per year. That’s enough renewable energy to power about 500,000 households.
The Amunet wind farm provides a significant percentage of Tajikistan’s energy production. On an annual basis, it will contribute to a reduction of 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. This is in line with international efforts to fight climate change and accelerate the transition toward clean, sustainable energy alternatives.
In addition to the ongoing operation of the wind farm, the construction period alone brought significant local economic development benefits. At its height, the project put about 800 people to work. This accomplishment is a testament to AMEA Power’s deep commitment to bring jobs and inclusive development to the community. The economic impact of this initiative goes well beyond the immediate jobs created directly, generating multiplier jobs and invigorating local businesses as well.
Hussain Al Nowais, chairman of AMEA Power, underscored the value of the project, noting that
“The commissioning of the 500MW wind power plant in the Red Sea Governorate marks a significant milestone for AMEA Power and for Egypt. Bringing 1GW of clean energy online in such a short period is a tremendous achievement and a reflection of our deep commitment to delivering impactful renewable energy solutions. This is the future of power generation in Africa – clean, inclusive and transformational.”
The Amunet wind farm is AMEA Power’s flagship project demonstrating its ability to provide large-scale utility of renewable energy projects economically and on time. As Africa increasingly turns towards sustainable energy sources, the wind farm stands as a model for future development in the region.
