Alight Expands Solar Portfolio with New Acquisitions in Finland

Alight has exciting plans to develop its first solar park in Finland. This project, based in Eurajoki, embodies another significant step in the company’s growth to be a leader in the Nordic renewable energy sector. Finally, at 100 MW capacity, this solar park will be huge. It plays an important part in a larger strategy to increase energy production in a state that faces challenges with limited local power generation and grid congestion.

Along with the Eurajoki project, Alight has bought two utility-scale solar projects from Finnish developer 3Flash. Taken together, these acquisitions will more than double through planned solar capacity – by nearly 200 MW. They serve as critical battery energy storage systems (BESS) that further improve energy reliability across the highly populated region.

Together, Alight and 3Flash will further refine these projects until they are fully designed and ready for construction. In Loviisa, we are working to create a large-scale solar park. It will further be a showpiece of capacity, at approximately 120 MW, including an about 45 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). This partnership represents both ENF and CanmetENERGY’s commitment to developing sustainable energy technologies in Finland.

We have just been awarded a new build project that starts with a little under 75 MW of capacity. Ideally we would like to see it connected to the grid by 2028. A 30 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has now been approved to be built at the same Eurajoki site. This addition will more than double the energy storage power in the region. The second is a repowering project expected to produce around 150 MW. We anticipate that its connection to the grid will be finished by sometime in 2030, due to an expansion of infrastructure laid down by Fingrid.

Alight’s projects are mid-way through progress in eastern Finland. They go from early conceptual design straight through to build ready.

Warren Campbell, Chief Executive Officer of Alight, highlighted the importance of these developments:

“By adding local solar and storage, we strengthen energy self-sufficiency and increase grid resilience in eastern Finland. With its strong solar conditions and available grid capacity, the region is an ideal location for new large-scale projects.”

Miko Huomo, from 3Flash, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration:

“We are very pleased to expand our cooperation with Alight through these projects. Together we are accelerating the build-out of grid-friendly solar and storage solutions in Finland.”
