Alight Expands Solar Footprint in Finland with New Project Acquisitions

These latest projects sold to Alight are developed by 3Flash, a Finnish developer specializing in large-scale solar. This decision represents a huge step forward for Alight’s renewable energy pipeline in Finland. This smart move brings more than 200 megawatts (MW) of planned solar capacity and batteries into Alight’s fold. Going forward, the two companies will work hand in glove to engineer these projects. Together, they are working towards achieving construction readiness and deepening their collaboration within Finland’s rapidly growing renewable energy market.

The winning project originates from eastern Finland. It’s targeting connection to the grid by 2028, and should ultimately have a capacity of around 75 MW. This area is particularly advantageous for solar energy production due to its relatively low local power generation and reduced grid congestion. Alight recently received permission to build a 30 MW BESS at the first project location. This announcement is an important and exciting move for the company.

Alight and 3Flash are thrilled to share that they are diving into a new solar project! This collaborative effort is estimated to produce approximately 150 MW of electricity. Construction for this second project will tie their development to the grid via a new substation expansion, courtesy of the Finnish transmission operator, Fingrid. Expected completion of this expansion would be around 2030.

Alight recently announced that it would build its first solar park in Europe, a 100-MW park in Eurajoki, Finland. The company’s Finnish projects span all stages from early development into readiness for construction. This is an exciting sign of growing commitment to more rapidly expanding renewable energy resources to all corners of the country.

Warren Campbell, CEO of Alight, underscored the significance of this partnership to local energy infrastructure.

“By adding local solar and storage, we strengthen energy self-sufficiency and increase grid resilience in eastern Finland. With its strong solar conditions and available grid capacity, the region is an ideal location for new large-scale projects.” – Warren Campbell, Alight CEO

3Flash CEO Miko Huomo said he was excited about the company’s partnership with Alight and the project.

“We are very pleased to expand our cooperation with Alight through these projects. Together we are accelerating the build-out of grid-friendly solar and storage solutions in Finland.” – Miko Huomo, 3Flash CEO

Alight and 3Flash are collaborating to elevate the voices of renewable energy advocates and change brokers. Their partnership is driving Finland toward greater energy independence and sustainability. The priorities help grow the region’s economy. They’ll lead to new jobs and innovations in how we produce energy.
