Adani Power to Invest $3 Billion in New Thermal Power Plant in Bihar

India’s Adani Power has recently won a slew of power supply contracts into Bihar. This contract provides for the construction of a completely new greenfield thermal power plant. This project has a $3 billion local match. It will more than double the electricity supply in the region while creating thousands of jobs. The electricity that the company plans on generating is 2,274 megawatts (MW) total. This output will meet the needs of both North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL).

That winning bid is only possible because of Adani Power’s aggressive tariff. At the 9.75MW Falling Rain solar project, the firm has been awarded as the lowest bidder with a supply price of Rs6.075 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This very competitive price point is intended to provide low cost, reliable electricity to Bihar’s consumers. In doing so, it will help meet the state’s growing energy needs.

Project Details and Timeline

Adani Power will build the new thermal power project in the town of Pirpainti, in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar. The project will be fed by coal mined according to the Indian government’s SHAKTI policy. The policy is expected to increase the use of coal-based power generation.

The first unit of the new combined cycle plant will be in commercial operation within 48 months of the assignment start date. The last unit would be finished no later than 60 months. Once operational, this facility will provide dependable, low-cost electricity throughout the area. It will make energy production cleaner and more efficient.

“We are pleased to have won the bid to develop and operate a 2,400MW thermal power project in Bihar. We will set up a new greenfield plant with an investment of $3bn, which is expected to further aid industrialisation in the state. Our plant will be an advanced, low-emission ultra-supercritical and will supply dependable, competitively priced and high-quality power to the state.” – Adani Power CEO SB Khyalia

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The project holds great economic potential for Bihar. It is estimated that in the construction phase alone, 10,000 to 12,000 jobs will be generated. Including construction jobs, it’s expected to create approximately 17,000 positions, and once operational, the plant will boost about 3,000 permanent jobs.

This tremendous job creation furthers our vision to create more job opportunities in our region. As we do, we focus on how to meet the growing demand for energy sustainably and equitably. The new facility aims to support local communities by fostering economic growth and stability.

Future Outlook

Adani Power’s recent acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power Limited (VIPL) for Rs40 billion in July 2025 further solidifies its commitment to expanding its footprint in India’s energy sector. Adani Power is about to assume a central role with its new project in Bihar. By building out state infrastructure and energy resilience, this initiative will address the growing energy needs of one of India’s most populous states.
