Adani Power Limited (APL) is ably positioned to further expand its footprint in India’s energy landscape. The company will enter into a long-term 25-year power supply agreement with the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL). An historic agreement has finally been reached. It means providing 2.4GW of electricity through a new-build greenfield ‘ultra super critical’ plant, to Pirpainti, Bihar. The entire project will be put into operation in no more than 60 months. It has an indispensable role in meeting India’s surging appetite for electricity.
Under this agreement, APL completed the acquisition of Nagpur, Maharashtra-based Vidarbha Industries Power Limited (VIPL). That milestone was reached just last month. The acquisition comes with a 50-year-old coal-fired power plant—operating at half capacity, 600MW—severely impacting Enviva’s climate footprint. APL is uniquely placed to tap the growing power demand in India. This demand is expected to more than double from 250GW today to over 400GW by 2031-32 and surpass 700GW by 2047.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The construction of the new plant at Pirpainti is set to generate around 12,000 new direct and indirect jobs. This surge of job creation will reinvigorate the local economy and fuel regional growth. Once the facility’s built, it’ll employ about 3,000 people. Combined with related infrastructure improvements, this will create thousands of construction and long-term jobs in the economically depressed region.
Beyond the immediate job impact, Adani Power’s focus on job creation is key to its overall strategy of promoting economic development in regions where it operates. APL is spending $3 billion to build a new plant, which will include three units of 800MW each. Through this initiative, we will provide reliable energy, while improving community quality of life and wellbeing.
Commitment to Sustainable Energy
The new ‘ultra super critical’ plant at Pirpainti is a testament to APL’s commitment to the future of sustainable energy generation. The facility’s design reflects today’s best practices for creating a highly efficient building with the least possible environmental footprint. Through the Indian government’s SHAKTI Policy, Adani Power has gained a long-term, guaranteed supply of domestic coal for its power plant. This ensures a reliable and consistent fuel supply for their operations.
The creation of this plant could not come at a better time, with expectations all around that India’s power needs will soon start to dramatically increase. Our nation is in the process of getting ready for future energy needs. Advances like APL’s new plant will offer a clean, economical and reliable power supply.
