Adani Power Expands Footprint with $466 Million Acquisition of Vidarbha Industries

Adani Power has now won Vidarbha Industries Power Limited (VIPL). This agreement was worth Rs40 billion, or about $466 million. Adani Power is showing aggressive intent to increase its active capacity. This initiative is another example of their persistent work in the Indian energy sector. The deal closed in early July 2025. This was just three months after the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal had approved a resolution plan, in favour of Ambani, in June 2025.

The Vidarbha relief power plant has been installed in Butibori, in the Nagpur district of Maharashtra. It is the only entity that has operated two coal-fired units, each with a capacity of 300 megawatts. This acquisition further diversifies and strengthens Adani Power’s already enviable portfolio. It further aligns with the company’s overarching plan to make its generation portfolio cleaner and greener across India.

Strategic Expansion Plans

At the same time, Adani Power is showing new signs of traction in foundational infrastructure-building. They have proposed to build a 1,600-megawatt greenfield USCTPP in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. This investment is an indicator of the company’s broader commitment to grow its power generation capacity while being good environmental stewards.

Besides, Adani Power is already building fast track six brownfield USCTPPs of 6,400 megawatts (MMT). This advocacy follows their persistent efforts as an environmental watchdog on the Mirzapur necklace project. There are half a dozen other plants either under construction or planned across the country. These are Singrauli-Mahan in Madhya Pradesh, Raipur, Raigarh and Korba in Chhattisgarh and Kawai in Rajasthan. The capacity of these projects combined is set to make a big impact on India’s energy needs.

Recent Acquisitions and Projects

As recently as June 2025, Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL) won a competitive bid for an interstate transmission project in Maharashtra. The project has a total value of Rs16.6 billion, approximately $194.2 million. This project enhances AESL’s capability to transmit electricity effectively across state lines, further strengthening Adani’s position in the energy market.

When the National Company Law Tribunal approved the resolution plan, it was a turning point for Adani Power. Come July 2025, that’s exactly what this company is going to do. It will be the first to easily fold VIPL’s forward-thinking, community-centered operations into its larger, national connectivity strategy. After all, the acquisition is just as crucial for Adani Power. It’s allowing the company to align around long-term objectives in a shifting energy market across both renewable and non-renewable energies.
