Adani Group and DGPC Launch Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project to Boost Bhutan’s Energy Capacity

In another important step to strengthen Bhutan’s renewable energy base, Adani Group has partnered with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC). To that end, they signed joint initiatives regarding the construction of the Wangchhu hydroelectric project. This initiative marks the first project following a memorandum of understanding established in May 2025, wherein both companies committed to co-develop 5 gigawatts (GW) of hydropower in Bhutan. Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani signed the agreements jointly. Their inclusion underscores the importance of this partnership.

The Wangchhu hydroelectric project will play a critical role in meeting Bhutan’s peak winter electricity demand when traditional hydropower generation is notably low. In addition, during the summer months when demand is lower at home, the project will look to export surplus power into India. This step will deepen energy relations between the two countries.

Project Overview and Timeline

For the Wangchhu hydroelectric project, construction will begin in the first half of 2026. We can all agree to have the project finished no later than five years after we start. This flashy endeavor is just one example of the quickly growing alliance between India’s Adani Group and DGPC. It further emphasizes Bhutan’s exceptional dedication to sustainable energy solutions.

The partnership aims to utilize Bhutan’s rich water resources effectively, aligning with the nation’s goal of becoming a high-income Gross National Happiness (GNH) country. The new hydroelectric initiative will help strengthen the region’s energy independence, prosperity and environmental stewardship.

Economic and Environmental Impact

This Adani Group–DGPC partnership is central to the overall Indian hydropower push. It strengthens stellar bilateral ties between Bhutan and India. According to Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, this collaboration has “immensely benefited both countries and is considered the cornerstone of the exemplary and friendly relations that the two countries enjoy.”

The Wangchhu hydroelectric project will help fulfil rising local energy needs. Beyond that, it will help enormously improve regional energy security. Bhutan is cementing its role as a leader in sustainable development. As one of the nation’s first offshore wind projects, this project will serve as a guide post for future renewable energy projects.

“Bhutan is a role model for the world in sustainable development, and we are very excited to play a leading role in the development of the country’s natural resources through this renewable energy project.” – SB Khyalia

Strategic Importance for Bhutan and India

With Bhutan now seeking to tap the full extent of its hydropower potential, the Wangchhu project represents a smart investment. In addition to substantial economic benefits, the project will further energy cooperation between neighboring Bhutan and India. These key democratic priorities of renewable energy development and climate change mitigation with their regional priorities align well with the initiative.

The collaboration between Adani Group and DGPC shows high level of mutual trust. It’s a testament to their shared vision for sustainable growth. If, as the Wangchhu hydroelectric project goes forward, it can stand as a shining example of fruitful international cooperation in the field of renewable energy.
