Actis, a leading global investor in sustainable infrastructure, today announced the successful divestiture of Orygen to Grupo Romero. This strategic decision represents an important change for Orygen. As the second-largest power generation platform in Peru, it has an overall installed capacity of 2.3 gigawatts (GW). The transaction represents the breadth of Orygen’s portfolio including wind, solar, hydroelectric and thermal gas assets. This creates the impression that the company is uniquely committed to renewable energy.
Since being acquired by Actis, Orygen has positioned itself as a pioneer of the renewable energy market in Peru. During that time, the company has signed on for more than 1.7 terawatt-hours of renewable energy from third-party generators. This milestone is a testament to its remarkable operational excellence. In September 2024, Orygen grabbed national headlines when it issued a $1.2 billion investment-grade bond. This sale turned out to be the largest single-tranche Peruvian private corporate bond sale to date. This bond represented Actis’ largest capital markets debt initiative, further solidifying Orygen’s financial standing.
Actis purchased Orygen in 2024, around which point the company had been able to implement a number of strategic moves. Among these was EPM’s purchase of Enel’s stake in Enel Generación Perú, and full ownership of Compañía Energética Veracruz. These carefully targeted acquisitions have considerably strengthened the Orygen competitive edge within the dynamic energy market.
Nicolas Escallon, Actis’ energy infrastructure managing director, played a pivotal role in overseeing Orygen’s operations. Under his leadership, Orygen finished the Wayra 2 wind farm, increasing its total capacity by 177 megawatts (MW). The company has started building Wayra Solar, a 100-MW-peak solar project. This step demonstrates their deep commitment to diversifying their energy mix with more renewable energy.
The divestiture to Grupo Romero is Actis’ latest move in matching its broader strategy to make successful exits across its portfolio of real assets. Since its founding in 2009, Actis has developed, owned, operated or contracted for approximately 42 GW of generation capacity globally. In addition, they have effectively exited more than 50 investments.
