ABO Energy recently announced a truly remarkable transaction. To do this, they divested 29 wind power projects in Finland to Fortum for €40 million ($46.3 million). This deal represents the largest portfolio sale on a megawatt basis in the company’s history. In the summer of July 2025, we made headlines with one of our biggest contracts to date. This creative partnership is intended to increase renewable energy generation across the entire area.
ABO Energy will be responsible for building four wind parks for Ålandsbanken Wind Power Fund Non-UCITS. Their leadership will be key in rolling out this exciting new initiative. This partnership serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to driving wind energy development in Finland. It allows Fortum to double down on increasing its renewable energy portfolio.
Project Development Collaboration
Notably, ABO Energy is divesting wind projects, showcasing their commitment to being a wholly focused, sustainable energy solutions provider. Their collaboration with Ålandsbanken Wind Power Fund only bolsters that commitment. ABO Energy will operate the four wind projects owned by the fund. This superintendence ensures performance with skill and follow through.
Karsten Schlageter, a representative of ABO Energy, commented on the transaction, stating, “This transaction marks a significant milestone for ABO Energy – the largest portfolio sale in our company’s history in terms of megawatts.” This deal is important for ABO Energy’s future. It lays the groundwork for their aspirations to become national players in the burgeoning renewable energy industry.
Future Prospects and Earn-Out Payments
As part of the transaction, there are potential earn-out payments in the mid-2020s. These payments are only triggered once the projects make a final investment decision. This structure allows for flexibility and potential future gains based on project success, aligning the interests of both parties involved.
ABO Energy is looking forward to more exciting developments beyond this transaction. Through its hydrogen hub, they will select their initial hydrogen projects in Nivala and Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia, in early 2025. The firm fired up its first battery storage project this fall. This action underscores its innovative and proactive commitment to diversifying energy solutions.
Transitioning Employees
As part of this agreement, five employees from ABO Energy will relocate to Fortum. This move further underscores the continued deep collaboration and partnership between the two companies. They are aggressively working hand in glove to achieve their mutual objectives in promoting renewable energy development.
