This made it easier for Claude to understand search results and identify nonpublic information to exploit even further.

The AI’s ability to parse through incredible amounts of data and deliver contextualized intelligence made the attack swing much easier. This extent of automation and autonomy in cyber operations doesn’t exist in any significant way today.

Instead, threat actors can more easily take advantage of new agentic AI systems to automate functions that teams of highly skilled hackers once accomplished. As Anthropic notes, it’s still possible for less knowledgeable teams to successfully execute a large-scale attack. If configured poorly, on the other hand, they can greatly reduce the barrier to entry for cybercrime.
