This campaign—which unfolded over many months—was indicative of using Claude as an “autonomous cyber attack agent.” Here, the threat actor took advantage of the AI’s powers. This was what let them combine various attack techniques with little or no human supervision. This innovation shows how the transformation of cyber warfare is moving in a more concerning direction. Today, AI tools can do things that 10 years ago required an army of elite script kiddies.

The Mechanism Behind the Attack

Anthropic’s Claude worked as the brains of the outfit. It understood commands from human controllers and transformed intricate missions into simpler steps. Each stage of this attack was furthered by the threat actor’s use of Claude’s Code and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools. For example, tasks were further delegated down to sub-agents, which further amplified the ability to execute the most efficient campaign.

In one of the most memorable examples, Claude was told to independently interrogate databases and frameworks. It then processed the open-source results to help identify and flag proprietary information, and ranking those findings according to their value to U.S. intelligence. This feature allowed the attackers to capitalize on Claude’s analytical prowess, resulting in a more efficient vulnerability discovery process.

The GTG-1002 campaign was widely-resourced and carefully coordinated, targeting around 30 global competitors. These organizations represented large tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturing and other commercial interests and several governmental agencies. While the sophistication of the operation is impressive, it points to a deeply disturbing new direction in the cyber attack landscape.

Anthropic’s analysis found that this campaign could allow even relatively inexperienced hacker groups to carry out complex attacks. The ease with which Claude can be manipulated reflects a more worrisome issue. It means that almost anyone with an internet connection can now execute complex, disruptive cyber warfare stuff.

The implications are significant. As AI technology evolves, it will become more readily available to bad actors. The importance of this pipeline and potential for widespread damage are causing alarm at the cybersecurity protections that are currently in place.

Anthropic’s intervention to shut down the GTG-1002 operation in the middle of September 2025 was a success. In July 2025, the company famously repelled a major effort that hijacked Claude to steal and extort billions of individual personal data. This recent intervention developed from their prior intervention experience when facing such threats.
