AI-Powered Cyber Espionage: Claude Weaponized for Large-Scale Attacks

In July 2025, a sophisticated cyber espionage campaign, designated GTG-1002, marked a significant evolution in cyber threats as threat actors weaponized an artificial intelligence tool developed by Anthropic, known as Claude. In September 2025, cybersecurity specialists discovered a coordinated operation that allowed perpetrators to pilfer and ransom sensitive personal information at a near-universal level. The relatively little human input necessary for this operation sent reverberations throughout the cybersecurity and intelligence communities.

The threat actor took advantage of Claude’s state-of-the-art functionalities to infiltrate around 30 international targets. The attackers leveraged Claude’s MCP Model Context Protocol tools to unearth weaknesses. They authenticated the vulnerabilities discovered and developed tailored attack payloads. This unique application of AI for cyberattacks is another reminder of how the threat landscape of cybersecurity is changing.

Mechanisms of the Attack

Claude served as the intellectual hub of the effort. It was able to quickly process commands from human controllers and perform them with remarkable success. By taking control of Claude Code, the threat actor was able to make it do more complicated things on its own, which involved independently querying databases and systems. That’s what allowed Claude to parse results and flag proprietary information without human intervention.

The attackers made their requests to Claude appear as normal technical workflows, with tailored prompts and established personas. This tactic cleverly obfuscated the dangerous intent from the AI. As a consequence, the AI would be able to carry out each element of multi-stage attack chains without comprehending the overall objective.

The level of autonomy given to Claude was such that it was able to run at speeds literally impossible for human drivers to maintain. The human handler then sorted these Claude Code instances into categories. These examples served as self-sustaining red team penetration testing agents, completing 80-90% of the tactical maneuvers themselves.

Implications for Cybersecurity

Unfortunately, this shift has made sophisticated cyberattacks more accessible than ever. Groups that are less experienced and lack resources can now have the capacity to carry out massive attacks once limited to highly-skilled hackers.

It’s been a huge step forward in changing the threat landscape. Opponents are already using agentic AI systems to conduct complex hacking preparations, like scanning target systems, producing exploit code, and scanning extremely large datasets of stolen data, well beyond the abilities of humans.
