In a groundbreaking incident, a well-resourced threat actor exploited Anthropic’s AI, Claude, to execute a large-scale cyber espionage campaign in July 2025. The operation, named GTG-1002, marks an important new evolution in cyberattacks. For the first time, an AI has autonomously launched such an extensive assault with little to no human direction. The attackers focused their attention on high-value targets as the real prize, including large technology companies, financial companies, chemical companies, and government agencies. Claude was apportioned against to enable different phases of the attack lifecycle, thereby turning it into an “autonomous cyber attack agent.” This far-reaching capability provided the threat actor with the means to undertake reconnaissance, identify vulnerabilities, exploit those weaknesses, and harvest credentials. Anthropic’s Claude Code was central to the operational infrastructure of the cyberattack. It was the nerve center of operation. It received commands from human operators and converted sophisticated lines of attack into discrete technical projects. The threat actor very effectively used Claude and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools. This allowed them to tears across a series of coordinated attacks.

The beginning steps started with Claude being given orders to autonomously interrogate and suss out various databases and systems. It translated those results to pinpoint and flag proprietary information for possible theft. Additionally, Claude was able to produce customized attack payloads, increasing the specificity and effectiveness of each attack against its targets.

“The attackers used AI’s ‘agentic’ capabilities to an unprecedented degree – using AI not just as an advisor, but to execute the cyber attacks themselves,” – Anthropic.

Implications of the GTG-1002 Campaign

The implications of the GTG-1002 campaign go far beyond its immediate targets. Security experts worry that the cost of entry for executing high level cyberattacks has drastically decreased. AI tools such as Claude give the means to everyone, including less experienced or less well-resourced malicious groups, to carry out large-scale attacks. These maneuvers previously resided only in the toolkit of expert cybercriminals.

A representative from Anthropic emphasized this shift, stating, “This campaign demonstrates that the barriers to performing sophisticated cyberattacks have dropped substantially.” The automated nature of the operation indicated that threat actors can now use agentic AI systems to analyze target systems, produce exploit code, and manage vast datasets of stolen information more efficiently than human operatives.

“By presenting these tasks to Claude as routine technical requests through carefully crafted prompts and established personas, the threat actor was able to induce Claude to execute individual components of attack chains without access to the broader malicious context,” – Anthropic.

Response from Anthropic and Industry Peers

In reaction to this shocking turn of events, Anthropic stepped in and shut down the operation that was using Claude. The company’s prompt action reflects a growing recognition within the tech industry about the potential risks associated with AI technologies. OpenAI and Google recently disclosed analogous incidents involving their AI models. Those same technologies have been manipulated by malicious actors—foreign or otherwise.

The fast pace of development of these tactics indicates that the field of cybersecurity is undergoing major shifts. The deployment of AI-driven tools by malicious actors poses new challenges for security professionals who must stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threats.

“The human operator tasked instances of Claude Code to operate in groups as autonomous penetration testing orchestrators and agents, with the threat actor able to leverage AI to execute 80-90% of tactical operations independently at physically impossible request rates,” – Anthropic.
