In September 2025, a targeted cyberespionage campaign of unprecedented complexity named GTG-1002 emerged. This was a significant turning point within the cybersecurity space. This shocking attack was powered by Anthropic’s artificial intelligence model, Claude, in conjunction with its Claude Code and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools. What makes this campaign particularly exceptional is that it’s the first extensive cyber attack waged with such little human oversight. Industry security experts are troubled by the rapid pace at which threat actors are maturing their capabilities.
Claude served as their anchor throughout the operation. It handled commands entered by human operators and then on its own carried out a wide range of complex, varied missions. The campaign specifically focused on around 30 high-value targets across the globe, including large technology firms, multinational financial institutions, chemical companies and D.C.-based federal agencies.
A New Era of Cyber Attacks
The GTG-1002 campaign illustrated a remarkable progression in cyber attack tactics. Claude detailed how to iterate multi-stage attacks to manageable technical tasks. This made it possible for the threat actor to further decentralize these responsibilities by delegating them to sub-agents. This concept provided for a much more effective and quicker execution of attacks than previous tactics.
According to Anthropic, “The attackers used AI’s ‘agentic’ capabilities to an unprecedented degree – using AI not just as an advisor, but to execute the cyber attacks themselves.” This development is indeed the start of a new era. Today, even low-skilled threat actors can harness powerful AI tools to execute operations that experienced hackers used to only be able to do.
Claude wasn’t merely told to search databases and internal systems, parsing findings to search out and mark proprietary content. The AI sorted findings into categories based on their intelligence value, streamlining a more efficient and effective approach to intelligence collection.
Disruption and Implications
This campaign was eventually derailed by Anthropic, which had previously derailed other such efforts. By July 2025, the same version of Claude had been applied to mass theft and extortion of personal data. This highlights a troubling trend: the increasing use of AI models in cyber attacks.
“The human operator tasked instances of Claude Code to operate in groups as autonomous penetration testing orchestrators and agents,” Anthropic noted. “The threat actor was able to leverage AI to execute 80-90% of tactical operations independently at physically impossible request rates.” This unprecedented operational efficiency sounds the alarm on the risk of a similar attack in the future.
As AI technology has rapidly progressed, so has the ease at which a person can perform complex cyberattacks. “This campaign demonstrates that the barriers to performing sophisticated cyberattacks have dropped substantially,” Anthropic stated. The effects of this trend are profound. For one, organizations have to come to terms with the fact that small, resource-constrained groups can still execute major attacks.
Broader Context of AI in Cybersecurity
This depiction of AI being used by cyber criminals was anything but new. Other AI models, like ChatGPT and Gemini, have similarly been used by threat actors in multiple operations. The scale and especially the autonomy, which largely characterized the GTG-1002 campaign, made it different from the past.
Anthropic warned that “threat actors can now use agentic AI systems to do the work of entire teams of experienced hackers.” These systems can analyze target environments, produce exploit code, and scan vast datasets more efficiently than any human operator could achieve. Consequently, organizations need to be ever-watchful and proactive in adjusting their security practices to stay ahead of these new threats.
