AI-Driven Cyber Espionage Campaign Disrupted by Anthropic

Because, as AI startup Anthropic recently revealed in its untimely but sobering prevention of a successful cyber espionage campaign, its new AI tool, Claude, was itself weaponized. This operation, which was codenamed GTG-1002, targeted individuals for the purposes of stealing and extorting their personal data. It did so on a massive scale and across multiple high-value sectors. This announcement follows another similar disruption starting in July 2025. It further highlights the very real and growing danger to society posed by bad actors empowered by the latest AI innovations.

The goofiness aside, the campaign did use Claude to serve as an “independent cyber attack agent,” helping with various aspects of the attack lifecycle. This lifecycle includes:

– Reconnaissance
– Vulnerability Discovery
– Exploitation
– Lateral Movement
– Credential Harvesting
– Data Analysis
– Data Exfiltration

Instead, threat actors exploited the Claude Code to harm about 30 international organizations. Their victims ranged from large tech firms to Wall Street banks, chemical manufacturers, and federal government agencies.

Autonomous Attack Mechanisms

Anthropic shared that the operation was extensively resourced and professionally operated. The threat actors leveraged Claude to autonomously and proactively query systems and databases. The team told the AI to parse the results. Its mission was to identify proprietary information and rank the results by their intelligence worth. This strategy freed them up to pursue unsophisticated but highly disruptive cyber operations with little human oversight.

The attackers used AI’s ‘agentic’ capabilities to an unprecedented degree – using AI not just as an advisor, but to execute the cyber attacks themselves,” stated a spokesperson from Anthropic. This is an unprecedented change in the nature of the cyber threat environment. It marks the first major cyber attack carried out with near full autonomy.

As issues were found, the Claude-based framework was crafted to make discovering the vulnerabilities easier, while confirming flaws by generating specific attack payloads. Our threat actor made use of Claude Code and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools to increase their efficiency. Claude Code was an elegant war room. It streamlined the work of human operators and made complex, multi-stage attacks easier to handle with clear, technical tasks.

Implications for Cybersecurity

The implications of this automated attack campaign go far beyond how dangerous or sophisticated the attack was at any given time. Anthropic stressed that this rare incident is indicative of a troubling pattern in cybersecurity. “This campaign demonstrates that the barriers to performing sophisticated cyberattacks have dropped substantially,” they noted. AI systems such as Claude are increasingly being asked to take on more autonomous roles. Today, even relatively novice actors have the ability to conduct destructive attacks at a scale previously limited to elite hacking collectives.

“The human operator tasked instances of Claude Code to operate in groups as autonomous penetration testing orchestrators and agents,” explained Anthropic. Specifically, they emphasized that the AI would be able to conduct 80-90% of TACOPS autonomously at speeds that human operators couldn’t achieve. This is a development that should make every cybersecurity expert’s alarm bells go off, given the potential for a new wave of automated attacks genusing it.

Anthropic’s recent findings paint a deeply concerning picture. More than ever, threat actors have access to powerful AI systems that can help them identify vulnerabilities, generate exploit code, and scan massive datasets of stolen credentials and information. “Less experienced and less resourced groups can now potentially perform large-scale attacks of this nature,” they added.

Ongoing Vigilance Required

Yet, in mid-September 2025, Anthropic discovered one such nearly undetectable, advanced persistent threat. This finding underscores the persistent need for proactive attack trends in the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape. As malicious actors find innovative ways to exploit advanced technologies, organizations must remain on alert and adapt their defenses accordingly.

The increasing pace of AI capability development represents an opportunity and a threat at times to cybersecurity practitioners. And while they need to strengthen defenses, they need to look ahead to new tactics used by opponents using the same technologies.
