Academic Foundation and Early Influences

Genya Crossman’s love for physics was nurtured from the beginning of her education. She went to McGill University in Montreal, for her bachelor’s in physics, starting in 2011. Her father, Antony Crossman, an electrical and electronics engineer and IEEE life senior member, played an outsized role in charting her path. When she enrolled at McGill, he gave her an IEEE student membership. From here, this introduction led to a network of other passionate professionals excited to enhance the high school engineering and technology landscape.

In 2014, she received a graduate degree in regional planning from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she deepened her education and skills beyond her initial passions. Throughout this time she collaborated with Eliska Greplova, an associate professor at TU Delft. Greplova invited Crossman into her interdisciplinary quantum matter and AI research group, giving the undergraduate a rare window into world-class, cutting-edge research.

In reflecting on her own academic experience, Crossman pointed out that resources were very limited when she first started learning about quantum mechanics.

Her determination and enthusiasm for her issue helped push her past this hurdle. Because of this, she delivered powerful contributions to the growing field of quantum computing.

Professional Role and Contributions

Genya Crossman is the technical engagement lead at IBM. She leads five technical working groups that address multiple areas, such as healthcare/life sciences, materials science, high-energy physics, optimization, and sustainability. These interdisciplinary teams are key to creating real world quantum solutions to today’s most challenging problems.

Crossman’s new leadership role calls for strong facilitation of efforts by experts from multiple professional disciplines. She is a passionate advocate for the role of collaboration as a catalyst for innovation and change.

Her work is focused on moving quantum technology forward, but helping to bring awareness and education to stakeholders about the potential applications of quantum. At the recent sixth annual IEEE Quantum Week, which ran from August 31 to September 5 in Albuquerque, NM, she had them rapt. They were thrilled about the opportunity to see what quantum computing really means outside of theory.

Passion for Quantum Engineering

Genya Crossman’s excitement for quantum engineering shines through her dedication as a QISE Net mentor. She considers her work to be a fluid mixture between problem solving and artistry. At present, she feels like it’s still in a really formative and exciting time of development. It’s the interdisciplinary aspect of quantum computing that excites her most, though — the melding of different viewpoints and skill sets.

“I really enjoy quantum engineering and working with everyone because it’s such an interdisciplinary field,” – Genya Crossman

She argues that quantum computing is a lot more than just the actual hardware, stretching well beyond the activities into the future.

She thinks the future of technology will be success of interdisciplinary collaboration. This is particularly pressing for cutting edge developments in quantum technologies.

Crossman’s passion extends beyond her immediate work. She appreciates her membership in the IEEE, which helps her stay exposed to cutting edge research in many disciplines. This active engagement gives her a heads-up on emerging trends that may impact her work and the industry as a whole.
