Point2 Technology Unveils Innovative Cables to Revolutionize Data Centers

Point2 Technology has recently developed a new and groundbreaking All-Cloud Intelligent Data Center system that is designed to significantly improve the efficiency of data centers. This new technology features a novel digital element that connects directly to graphics processing units (GPUs). It has an ultra-fast, terahertz-frequency generator and a mixer that modulates data onto the terahertz signal. Point2 Technology’s mission is to flip the script on data transmission in today’s large-scale computing environments. They dramatically improve data transfer speeds and reduce latency.

Veteran employees from Marvell, Nvidia, and Samsung founded the startup nine years ago. Just last month, it raised $55 million in venture funding, led by cable and connector manufacturer Molex. Point2 Technology Inc. is well capitalized financially. This backing puts them on the cusp of transforming data transmission in data centers and deploying extremely cost effective solutions in comparison to optical legacy technologies.

Advanced Technology at Work

Point2 Technology just introduced its new e-Tube cables, which are based on eight innovative e-Tube fibers. Each new fiber can carry over 200 gigabits of data every second! This state-of-the-art capability enables a whopping total throughput of 1.6 terabits per second. The e-Tube cables are engineered to be the most effective and efficient. They take up less than a third the footprint of a typical 32-gauge copper twisted pair and provide up to 20x the distance.

Arguably one of the most impressive features of Point2 Technology’s system is its power consumption. It can achieve this with just one-third the power needed by optical systems, dramatically lowering ongoing operational costs for data centers. It delivers an unprecedented latency, down to one-thousandth of today’s optical technologies. This feature alone makes it incredibly attractive for fast and agile organizations.

David Kuo, vice president of product marketing and business development at Point2 Technology, emphasized the advantages of their innovative technology.

“You start with passive copper, and you do everything you can to run in passive copper as long as you can.” – Don Barnetson

This method illustrates the need to continue supporting compatibility with current infrastructure while still providing a robust upgrade path.

The Benefits of e-Tubes

Compared to traditional cabling solutions, Point2 Technology’s e-Tubes are more simple, reliable, convenient and affordable. The reason for this transmission capability is their unique design that lets them transmit data up to 20 meters away without losing much data. This feature sets them up perfectly for today’s data center architectures which need both adaptability and dependability in their data flow.

Additionally, Point2 Technology’s architecture incorporates one silicon chip that processes incoming digital data and automatically converts it into modulated millimeter-wave frequencies. This chip operates in conjunction with an antenna that radiates signals into the waveguide, enabling cutting-edge data transfer without skips or stalls. Using commercial, off the shelf, or standard silicon foundries for manufacturing these chips—as is possible with so-called RISC-V chips—would streamline production processes and drive costs down.

Dave Welch highlighted the reliability of electronic systems compared to optical ones, stating:

“Electronics have been demonstrated to be inherently more reliable than optics.” – Dave Welch

Such reliability is important for data centers that need high uptime, even in the most extreme scenarios.

A Game Changer for Data Centers

Point2 Technology’s innovations alone have the potential to revolutionize the way data centers get a grip on their operations. As demand for faster data transfer and reduced latency continues to grow, their technology offers a viable alternative to traditional optical systems. The e-Tubes also offer the best fit for scaling up with an effective solution within data centers.

At Point2, we’re pioneers of fast and reliable data transmission. Its lower power consumption needs play a crucial role, making it a game-changing technology. This change would drive the largest telecommunications companies to finally leave copper and optical technologies behind. Instead, they should welcome Point2’s cutting-edge solutions with open arms.

“If I didn’t have to be at [an optical wavelength], where should I be?” – Dave Welch

This question highlights the dire need for innovation across the practice. Businesses are scrambling to find ways to keep up with the ever-increasing business needs for data.

Point2 Technology is preparing to fab chips for their 1.6-terabit-per-second undersea cable. This is a fantastic development, as it foreshadows a bright future for this emerging technology. With the support of industry titans such as Molex, Point2 Technology has a solid start to a promising future. With Molex’s involvement, Molex has become a foundational player in the cable-and-connector ecosystem. It further solidified Point2’s stronghold in the marketplace.
