By synchronizing code, AI descriptions, and model structures across three interactive panels, A11yShape enables users to experience 3D modeling in an inclusive manner.
Liang He, an assistant professor of computer science at UT-Dallas, initiated the project after a discussion with a classmate. This classmate, who used a cane due to low vision, shared a passion for 3D modeling. As a part of this effort, he and his team understood the challenges that visually impaired people face. They had the vision to create a space that would allow these young women to develop and build on their own.
Features of A11yShape
A11yShape is made up of an innovative tri-panel layout featuring a live code editor, AI-assisted design guidance, and a model preview. EzCode features a vibrant code editor, making it easy to code and craft your own projects. The AI panel provides contextual, explanatory feedback that greatly increases users’ comprehension of their coding decisions. This connection is key for the user to understand how their code changes will affect the output 3D models.
Lastly, the model panel shows the hierarchical structure and visualizes the final model. When a user selects a piece of code or a model component, A11yShape highlights corresponding elements across all three panels. This two-way synchronization makes it easier for users to track code changes and updates to their visual representations, further solidifying their learning experience.

The tool uses OpenSCAD functionalities that connect every step of modeling through its three panels of application.
