Vanguard Unveiled as a New Underwater Human Habitat for Ocean Research

A UK-based firm named DEEP has just released Vanguard. This new, cutting-edge underwater habitat will allow scientists to explore, experiment and conduct groundbreaking research deep beneath the ocean’s surface. The habitat immersive unveiling took place inside the Streeters Hangar in Miami, Florida. With a capacity to accommodate 6 occupants, it will allow researchers to live and work underwater during weeklong dives—far surpassing the mere hours that current expeditions usually amount to.

Vanguard’s design features three main sections: a living chamber, a diving center, and a base. The living chamber measures 12 meters (40 feet) long and 3.7 meters (12 feet) wide. It has been engineered to withstand the pressure of ocean waters, while protecting up to four passengers. This new ocean-going habitat supports oceanographers and other researchers, equipping them with the tools they need to eat, sleep and work better and more safely underwater.

Designed for Long-Term Research

Vanguard’s new focus is to support the most impactful long-term underwater conservation projects.
