Alarmingly, that means close to 94% of juvenile Chinook salmon perish within a few weeks. They can’t even make it to the ocean from their freshwater birthplaces. This crisis highlights the importance of strong management strategies to ensure the long-term survival of this crucially important species.

Chinook salmon have an incredibly interesting, diverse and complex anadromous life cycle. They are born in freshwater, then migrate to saltwater, which stresses the importance of the whole watershed in their life cycle. California’s changing climate and water management practices place these fish at the thermal limit of their habitat, making them an essential species for understanding environmental adaptation. Recent efforts have been focused on determining the best pulse flow pattern on the Sacramento River. Combined, these changes would substantially improve the success of juvenile salmon in their migrations.

Experts, anglers, and water managers are sounding alarms over the shrinking ranks of Chinook salmon. They’ve come up with these really creative techniques to allow juvenile salmon make more direct migratory paths. One particularly exciting approach involves producing optimal pulse flows down rivers. Natural flooding conditions are recreated by these controlled flows, allowing salmon to successfully complete their life cycles. The size of these pulse flows might be as large as about 11,000 to 13,000 cubic feet per second.

Sustain these flows at high levels for one to two weeks. This timeframe aligns closely with the average time it takes a Chinook salmon to complete its downstream migration to the ocean. By implementing measures comparable to these, over 20,000 extra juvenile salmon could make it successfully to the ocean every year. This increase represents a potential 40% to 400% improvement in migration success rates, depending on how well these initiatives are executed.
