New Research Offers Cost-effective Solution to Enhance U.S. Election Security

A recent study published in the journal Operations Research has identified a better, scientifically based approach. Implementation of this low-cost approach would help further the integrity of U.S. elections by maximizing transparency. University of Illinois Chicago’s Bradley Sturt was a contributor on this research. It goes a long way in response to the increasing concerns around election security, particularly after the cutback of federal funds in the most recent budget.

The research took a fresh, extensive, and detailed dataset consisting of 6,928 unique ballot styles from Michigan’s 2022 general election. They did a retrospective analysis to determine just how well their new approach worked. This approach needed a relatively small increase of only 1.2% in test ballots. This simple adjustment went a long way toward improving election security. It does provide a hopeful glimmer of good news about how to protect democracy in America.

This analysis presents a novel approach to use color analysis to detect potential vulnerabilities indicating risk on voting machines. Most importantly, it enables detection before voters have begun casting their ballots. With these tools, officials can spot vulnerabilities early in the new election process. This empowers them to focus on detailed measures that address real risks and enhances public faith in electoral results. Sturt pointed to the research’s most cost-effective solution. This new approach is imperative not only for enhancing U.S. election security, but too as federal budget cuts continually hobble state budgets.
