Yann LeCun Launches AMI Labs to Revolutionize AI Understanding of the Real World

Famous computer scientist Yann LeCun is one of AMI Labs’ founders. So it’s no surprise that this startup is bent on building AI systems that understand and interact with the real world. Turing Prize winner LeCun, who now works at NYU, is the former chief AI scientist at Meta. He departed the tech giant to pursue a new audacious startup located in Paris.

The team at AMI Labs has a mission to build AI systems with the abilities of permanent memory, reasoning and planning. Unsurprisingly, they aim to address the limitations of existing language models, which often face issues such as hallucinations. With multilingual offices strategically placed in Montreal, New York, and Singapore, the little startup is set to change the world.

Under his leadership as executive chairman of AMI Labs, LeCun is pushing for an AI that goes beyond the confines of language. And with good reason — experiencing the world around us directly is the crux of what makes us intelligent in the first place.

“We share one belief: real intelligence does not start in language. It starts in the world.” – AMI Labs

Alex LeBrun, formerly in charge of AMI’s engineering group, has taken over as chief executive at AMI Labs. Before that, he shared co-founding and CEO duties at Nabla, an AI healthcare startup. His experience in developing AI solutions for healthcare aligns well with AMI Labs’ mission to create intelligent systems that can effectively understand and navigate reality.

LeCun’s move to found AMI Labs also comes at a time when there is an increasing interest in designing new, more distributed, AI technologies. The startup has already caught the eye of some big name investors, including Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, and Hiro Capital. According to TechCrunch, AMI Labs is already in talks to raise their next round of funding at a $5 billion valuation.

Laurent Solly, former VP Europe at Meta, will be joining AMI Labs. His arrival will bring tangible cultural strength to the team as he brings in experienced professionals from the tech industry.

LeCun is moving into themes of new exploration at AMI Labs and their practice. Alongside that, he intends to maintain his position as a professor at New York University, where he’ll continue to advance the state of the AI research.

French President Emmanuel Macron warmly welcomed LeCun’s efforts and recognized the need for nurturing innovation in France.

“We will do everything we can to ensure his success from France,” – Emmanuel Macron

AMI Labs’ mission is a great testament to the way leaders in every field—especially industry—are coming to understand the inevitable AI-powered future. It goes beyond natural language processing to foster a holistic knowledge of the physical world. The company is focused on engineering intelligent systems that reason and plan. This singular focus positions it squarely at the cutting edge of a quickly emerging and dynamic field.

AMI Labs is just getting started on this exciting, transformative journey. Its successes hold promise to reshape what’s possible with and how AI is used across many industries. The younger startup is focused on creating more innovative AI platforms. This commitment represents an extraordinary opportunity, a rare high point in technology, with the potential to transform industries across the globe.
