Workday, one of the leading providers of human resources technology, has acknowledged a data breach. This breach exposed sensitive data stored in a third-party customer relationship management (CRM) system. This post originally appeared on August 6, the day this crash was first reported. This has raised significant alarm from more than 11,000 corporate customers and approximately 70 million users globally, including major enterprises.
The breach as it was reported allegedly included the theft of extremely sensitive contact information, such as names, email addresses and phone numbers. Workday has not shared which third-party platform was breached or how many individuals were impacted. This lack of transparency has created an information vacuum, leaving a host of important questions to go unanswered for users and corporate clients alike.
“noindex”
In response to the breach, Workday spokesperson Connor Spielmaker issued the following statement. Unfortunately, he didn’t shed any more light on it than what’s been made public in the company’s blog post. Inquiries from TechCrunch about how many users had their data breached and if Workday had tracked down those people whose data was stolen. Sadly, they never got a reply.
The recent attack on Workday reveals a very concerning trend. Cybercriminals are taking an ever-growing interest in Salesforce-hosted databases, which more and more big businesses use. Just in recent weeks, Google, Cisco, Qantas, and Pandora have all suffered data breaches. All these breaches have been tied back to their Salesforce databases.
As one of the largest players in human resources technology, Workday’s breach raises alarms about the security measures in place for managing sensitive customer data. That’s not to say that the company hasn’t developed a powerful reputation for building comprehensive HR solutions. Today, its data protection protocols are coming under fire.
