Strava, a leading social fitness app, has made significant strides in expanding its offerings by acquiring two athletic training applications: Runna and The Breakaway. This move signals Strava’s strong interest in enhancing the tools available to users for planning their workouts and training regimens.
Strava was built for runners who want to log their workouts and map new outdoor running routes. As a consequence, it has cultivated an incredibly passionate user community. The app’s social aspect is another key element, allowing users to view where, when, and how their friends are working out. Open by default, Strava has built a community of fitness enthusiasts who want to encourage others and be encouraged along their journey.
Breakaway is an AI-powered cycling app that helps cyclists train smarter by creating personalized, adaptive training plans. The idea had been incubated throughout Y Combinator’s Summer 2021 class. This purchase comes on the heels of Strava’s recent acquisition of Runna, a UK-based app funded by JamJar, catered exclusively to runners. Continuing with these acquisitions, Strava intends to arm its users with more powerful training tools.
Strava has not yet clarified how or if it plans to integrate features from Runna and The Breakaway into its primary app. Runna will still exist as its own app. Now, The Breakaway appears poised to follow that same trajectory. Users should be able to rely on the pricing models or free tiers of the products acquired not to sui generis.
There are more ways than I can count to improve the user experience, to even making on boarding process easy,” said Martin, of Strava. He elaborated on the benefits that these acquisitions could bring, saying, “Think about how runners plan routes in Strava, train with Runna, and then share back to Strava again – we want to reduce friction in that loop.”
Despite some competition from other big brands and new entrants, Strava’s smart acquisitions and investments have made it the most popular and highest grossing fitness apps in the world. With these new additions, Strava is deepening its commitment to user engagement and satisfaction by bringing powerful new training plan tools.
