Rivian Automotive Inc., the electric vehicle manufacturer, revealed comprehensive specifications and pricing details for its upcoming R2 models on Thursday. Specifically, the base model of the Rivian R2 will have a starting price around $45,000. With this action, the company intends to place itself in the best possible competitive position in the quickly evolving EV market. The company plans to roll out the R2 models toward the end of this year. This would be one of the quickest nationwide rollouts of electric vehicles in U.S. history.
The base model R2 has an estimated range of about 275 miles on one charge. As a sign of this push, Rivian recently announced a new, entry-level “Standard” R2 variant. It will have an initial delivery date within the first half of 2027, a starting price of $48,490 and a maximum range of 345 miles. Dynamic performance Powering the new ARIZM electric platform, both models feature a rear-wheel-drive propulsion system. Rivian has not disclosed whether there are other differences between the variants aside from battery capacity.
Rivian has gained useful insights by building its second-generation R1 vehicles. Now, the company is taking all that learning and using it to sharpen its approach for the R2. With enhanced connections to create effective supply demand, the manufacturer is able to ensure that the new models preserve their competitive price points.
“We have made significant internal engineering, development and business efforts to reach our target price. We engineered out complexity by moving to a zonal electrical architecture, reducing the number of electronic control units, and utilizing our in-house drive units.” – Rivian
Here’s the catch— Rivian just revealed their R2 ! They’re building a $400-million factory in Georgia to churn out the parts for hundreds of thousands of R2 SUVs. First, the company is projecting sales projections to be 20k-25k units by the end of 2026. If these projections come to pass, Rivian would reach an important achievement. Only Tesla’s Model Y got to 20,000 sales quicker.
Rivian has high expectations for its forthcoming R2 family. Yet in 2025, the company was already facing a tough financial picture with plummeting sales of its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV. Touted as an intentional effort to help them reclaim their innovative spirit and long-held influence in their market space. Accomplishing this move is considered key to their success.
Rivian’s strategy of launching higher-spec trims first is industry standard. This strategy sets the tone for the entire series by highlighting the vehicle’s exceptional capabilities and performance attributes as production scales into both Premium and Standard configurations.
“Debuting with a high-spec trim is common industry practice and sets the stage for the entire lineup by showcasing the exceptional capability and acceleration that make a Rivian unmistakable, all while we scale production into our Premium and Standard configurations after.” – Rivian
With the R2, Rivian is racing forward with extremely ambitious plans. The company is dedicated to developing the next generation of innovative, commercially successful electric vehicles that most effectively serve the consumer market while reducing costs and creating operational efficiencies.
