In Philadelphia, OpenAI is gearing up to release its new Sora app. This fascinating challenger to TikTok hopes to change the way users interact with short-form video content. At a town hall announcement, CEO Sam Altman dropped some particularly thrilling news. The app will feature “granular,” opt-in copyright controls purpose built for creators. This build bug fixes one of the issues that has been raised by rightsholders about the use of their intellectual property in videos created by Sora’s AI.
Altman acknowledged that while the app will provide enhanced copyright options, there may still be “some edge cases of generations that get through that shouldn’t.” He talked about the need to better empower creators to have more say on how their characters are utilized. “We are hearing from a lot of rightsholders who are very excited for this new kind of ‘interactive fan fiction’ and think this new kind of engagement will accrue a lot of value to them, but want the ability to specify how their characters can be used (including not at all),” he stated.
Beyond the copyright capabilities, though, Sora’s most fascinating addition comes in the form of cameos. This enables anyone to upload their biometric information to discover their own digital double appearing in AI-generated videos. This innovation has the potential to further increase user engagement and personalization within the app.
The company recently alerted Hollywood studios and agencies about the new requirement. What’s more, they have to actively choose to exclude their IP from any of Sora’s content, by specifically opting out. This first-of-its-kind proactive approach is intended to build productive partnership and accountability with content developers across the creative industry.
Altman further mentioned monetization plans for the app, with OpenAI looking to experiment with undisclosed methods of video monetization. That announcement sparked the company’s only plan for monetization to date. In fact, their plan had them even dinging users for generating additional videos during times of peak demand on their service. Altman elaborated, stating, “we are going to have to somehow make money for video generation,” indicating that a more comprehensive monetization plan is in the works.
The Sora 2 model will be introduced during a large public gathering, Reimagine Place, taking place in San Francisco from October 27-29, 2025. This new event allows savvy consumers and dynamic industry professionals to learn more about the app’s expanded features and cutting-edge capabilities. It’s going to change everything you know about creating video content!
We are looking forward to the launch and know that OpenAI is deeply enthusiastic about user rights and creator engagement. This commitment is quickly becoming the gold standard in AI-created works.
