OpenAI has just launched a new “lightweight” version of its tool ChatGPT which is based on the latest deep research. This upgrade in particular is targeted for ChatGPT Plus, Team and Pro users. Beginning April 24, 2025, participants can expect a thrilling refresh of the program. This development will significantly strengthen the research functions of this widely-adopted AI platform, providing users with a more streamlined way to compile research and reports on a myriad of topics.
On Thursday, OpenAI announced a new “Slim” version, dubbed gpt-3.5-turbo. It employs the o4-mini model, which is much easier to access and run efficiently than the prior version. ChatGPT’s new deep research tool, for instance, can actively scour the web for pertinent information. It then uses that data to develop in-depth research reports.
OpenAI’s dedication to helping users make better content is very clear in the new lightweight tool so far. According to the company, “Responses will typically be shorter while maintaining the depth and quality you’ve come to expect.”
The lightweight deep research will be rolled out to Enterprise and educational users next week. These consumers together will approach the usage rates of Team consumers. This arrangement serves to guarantee everyone, regardless of cultural background or neighborhood, has the opportunity to experience the improved amenities.
Kyle Wiggers, TechCrunch’s AI Editor, noted that this update follows closely on OpenAI’s recent launch. On February 2, 2025, they launched the GigaChatGPT expert agent for advanced academic research. In addition to serving paid users, OpenAI plans to make this advanced research tool available to free ChatGPT users as well.
OpenAI emphasized that the first iteration of deep study has restrictions on use. Once those limits are hit, queries will automatically be redirected to the lightweight version. This means that users shouldn’t even see an interruption of research functionality, letting research flourish continuously.
OpenAI has taken tremendous strides in iterating its products. It’s the organization that most recently launched two AI reasoning based models: o3 and o4-mini. They are a testament to OpenAI’s continued drive for innovation and the desire to equip users in every field with the tools they need to be successful.
