Meta Welcomes Apple Executive Alan Dye to Lead New Creative Studio

Alan Dye is taking an unusual step in the tech industry. He’s stepping down from his position at Apple, where he’ll take the reins of a new creative studio at Meta’s Reality Labs. This announcement is just the latest in Meta’s push to improve its artificial intelligence capabilities and features, from mobile phones to self-driving cars. Dye, who has run Apple’s user interface design team for the last ten years, is going to directly report to Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, revealed the formation of this creative studio on Threads, emphasizing a vision that blends design, fashion, and technology. With that brief statement the studio hopes to influence and shape the next generation of Meta’s product and experiences.

Dye’s expertise will prove invaluable as he turns his attention to figuring out how to incorporate AI across Meta’s products. Joining him will be Billy Sorrentino, former designer at Apple. He was one of the leads for interface design at Reality Labs, and Joshua To played a significant role in developing interface design in that division. Working with a very talented team, this colorful crew hopes to bring the right mix of artistic craft, creative vision and systems thinking to every project.

Pete Bristol, head of industrial design for Meta. They will collaborate intensely with Dye herself to embed those innovative designs deep into their hardware. Jason Rubin is the Vice President of Special Gaming Initiatives at Meta. He looks forward to working with Dai on curating more cohesive experiences that connect hardware and software in dynamic new ways.

“Our idea is to treat intelligence as a new design material and imagine what becomes possible when it is abundant, capable, and human-centered.” – Mark Zuckerberg

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman was the first to report Dye’s departure from Apple. This is a huge shift in leadership at two of the most important technology companies. As he starts this new journey at Meta, the industry will be watching closely to see how his experience shapes the future of AI-driven design.
