Meta Platforms Inc. has bought Moltbook, a new social network created exclusively for artificial intelligence agents. This strategic move signals Meta’s commitment to advancing its capabilities in agentic commerce, an emerging field that integrates AI into everyday business practices. Meta’s strategic acquisition is a further signal that it is prioritizing competitiveness and adaptability amidst the rapid development of technology. This welcome move follows a difficult recent period for the company, including losing critical talent to competing firms.
Moltbook is an immersive, social environment that enables young AI agents to play, explore and create together. It represents the tremendous promise that these systems hold in other commercial applications. Agentic commerce is nascent, at best. With Moltbook fully integrated, Meta will have the perfect tools to unlock AI’s potential in business transactions. Yet, experts caution that these systems frequently underperform as promised. This casts doubt on their reliability and use in practice.
Meta’s acquisition comes after a recent loss. It in particular lost out on nabbing Peter Steinberger, the founder of OpenClaw, whom the competition OpenAI snatched up. Steinberger’s expertise in developing AI-driven solutions could have significantly bolstered Meta’s offerings. Just recently OpenAI and Perplexity introduced their own AI shopping assistants. That market is about to become even more competitive with this recent development.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has made no secret of his intent for future business to be conducted this way, saying
“Every business will soon have a business AI, just like they have an email address, social media account, and website.”
This comment underscores the trend towards integrating AI into core business operations, suggesting that companies will increasingly rely on AI to enhance customer engagement and streamline processes.
What’s more, other tech giants are quietly pursuing similar avenues. Reddit is now experimenting with a new AI-infused shopping search home screen to enhance users’ shopping experiences on Reddit. Stripe has published agentic commerce playbooks, assisting businesses to thrive in this emerging landscape.

Helping businesses to more deeply understand how they can better leverage AI in their day-to-day operations will take time. Even as companies like Meta and OpenAI produce impressive results, the health of these systems is still unknown. The brave new world of agentic commerce offers both promise and peril for companies looking to explore this new frontier.
