A recent report from Pew Research Center reveals a notable trend among social media influencers, particularly those leaning left politically, as they increasingly embrace the platform Bluesky. Since our last report, Bluesky has seen a massive increase in the number of influencers regularly posting on the platform. They increased from 54% in the first week of January to 66% by the last full week of March. This increase signifies a growing interest and engagement on the platform amidst a political landscape influenced by key figures such as Elon Musk and Donald Trump.
The data corroborates that as 69% of left-leaning accounts have completed their transition to Bluesky. Just 15% of right-wing accounts have done the same. This difference gives voice to the growing rift between right and left influencers in Bluesky. Despite this migration, a significant majority—82%—of the influencers tracked by Pew still maintain an account on X, previously known as Twitter. This figure represents a modest drop from 85% in the summer of 2025. It indicates that to the extent users are migrating to Bluesky, they’re not abandoning X in the process.
The report focused on a select group of 500 influencers, all of whom have over 100,000 followers on at least one major platform and regularly post about current events. Of these influencers, 51% of Bluesky accounts were established post-2024 presidential election. The flood of new users ties intimately to Elon Musk’s collusion with Donald Trump. This partnership has created a significant buzz around Bluesky among users interested in alternative social media platforms.
Action over on Bluesky is really gaining momentum! The rate of new users fleeing to X is beginning to decelerate. As this trend indicates, there makes a ton of excitement about Bluesky. Now, the platform appears to be reaching a ceiling as the initial wave of users settles into their new “X-space.”
