India is indeed showing the world the future in technological advancement! The country has recently pioneered AI chatbot-led e-commerce, using advanced platforms like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. India is the world’s most populous nation and home to more than a billion internet subscribers. This huge population presents enormous opportunity and desire for innovation in digital commerce. India’s National Payments Corporation, NPCI has partnered with OpenAI and Razorpay. Combined, they are changing the way that consumers shop, transact and pay online.
Together, this partnership brings consumers an entirely new way to connect with ChatGPT to shop and transact, providing a highly convenient experience. OpenAI has recently launched an “Instant Checkout” feature with its Agentic Commerce Protocol, created in partnership with Stripe. This groundbreaking tech has the potential to make more online transactions frictionless, creating more opportunities for users to convert with highly natural and easy conversational interactions.
Razorpay’s co-founder and CEO, Harshil Mathur, stated that this new payment experience would be crucial for the payment provider’s future. He’s convinced that consumer choice can change everything.
“It’s not just a payment experience,” – Harshil Mathur, Razorpay co-founder and CEO.
On the tech side, Razorpay has spearheaded the buildout of the merchant integration layer that will be needed for AI chatbot-driven transactions to occur. The company is currently negotiating with various merchants, including notable names like Bigbasket and Vi, to facilitate a broader rollout of this technology across India.
Razorpay’s progress lately has been … razor sharp. At the same time, Cashfree Payments recently launched its Agentic Payments Merchant Checkout Protocol (MCP), multi-channel accepting all major payment methods card and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) amongst them. According to Cashfree Payments co-founder and CEO Reeju Datta, the most exciting thing about this initiative is how forward-looking it is.
“This is still an early, forward-looking concept, but one with tremendous potential. Its adoption will naturally grow in line with how fast shopping agents take off,” – Reeju Datta, co-founder of Cashfree Payments.
AI-driven commerce is taking off, baby! OpenAI started expanding its low-cost sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan to India in early August of this year. This low-cost alternative enables OpenAI to become a key player in India’s rapidly expanding AI sector. Yet, it enhances equity and accessibility for a larger share of the population.
India is embarking on a new age of digital payments! Today, there’s no clear revenue-sharing framework for partners participating in agentic payments. That shows deep belief in advancing the user experience. The focus is similarly on expanding the technology’s benefits rather than pursuing short-term profit motives.
Although OpenAI’s tools are leading the charge, AI chatbots in e-commerce take many forms. Competitors such as Google and Anthropic are already developing similar technology integrations with their own LLMs. This latest move shows the competition brewing beneath the surface in the sector. As you can see, these new major players are making a big move. This is perhaps the clearest indication yet of how consumers will interact with brands and purchase in the near future.
From public and private advances in AI chatbot-led e-commerce to enhanced transaction security, India’s achievements represent a leap toward a broader, more inclusive digital economy. The combination of innovative technology and a vast user base positions the nation as a leader in adopting next-generation shopping experiences. Companies are focused on technology refinement and growing their partner ecosystems. For consumers, this means a future where all their shopping will be more personalized, efficient and enjoyable.
