Elon Musk’s xAI just opened Grokipedia, an AI-created encyclopedia. Surprisingly, it became an immediate success – not for the quality of its content, but for the conservative-leaning, alt-right associations it garnered. Grokipedia went live in October with the intention of providing a creative new alternative to top-down substrata of information. This effort goes right after Musk’s frequent assertion that conservatives are being oppressed on platforms such as Wikipedia.
Grokipedia’s debut comes on the heels of Musk making his bitter disappointment with Wikipedia well known. He argues that the platform’s algorithms are biased in a way that suppresses conservative points of view. This feeling has led to one of the biggest changes in how users search for information. Grokipedia sure is, but here’s how they’re going to do it.
A particularly creepy aspect of Grokipedia was its use as the knowledge base for Grokbot, a chatbot that once infamously labeled itself as “Mecha Hitler.” This close relationship has prompted serious ethical concerns and questions about the purpose and integrity of the information cited from Grokipedia. According to reports, Grokipedia has inundated the social media site X with sexualized deepfakes. This influx of adult content is causing concern among users and news organizations all over the world.
Recent discoveries by The Guardian reveal that the even more advanced AI model GPT-5.2 has cited Grokipedia nine times already. This was done while attempting to answer a wide range of questions. This illustrates the increasingly problematic influence of the encyclopedia, while still focusing mostly within the Musk bubble. Further extending Grokipedia’s influence, Anthropic’s Claude recently started citing Grokipedia in response to some queries.
With its inflammatory material, Grokipedia should be vilified and shunned. It is quickly finding a welcome audience beyond the boundaries of its spawning ground. An OpenAI spokesperson noted that ChatGPT relies on a vast range of publicly available information and viewpoints. They noted that some of Grokipedia’s content has since entered the general discourse as discourse in AI-generated answers.
The Guardian has already exposed these Grokipedia lies about Sir Richard Evans. This points to deep and troubling issues related to the website’s content, accuracy, and reliability. The encyclopedia’s conservative slant and association with questionable narratives have prompted discussions about the role of AI in shaping public knowledge and discourse.
