Pat Gelsinger, who concluded over 40 years at Intel in December, has unveiled a new benchmark aimed at assessing artificial intelligence alignment with human values. The benchmark, dubbed Flourishing AI (FAI), is a result of Gelsinger’s partnership with Gloo. He got in early with this “faith tech” company—he first invested in them close to a decade ago.
FAI’sofficiallaunch couldn’t be more timely as it coincides with rising calls for the ethical development of AI technology. Gelsinger’s initiative is a first step toward guaranteeing that AI models fulfill their intended tasks. It seeks to ensure that they connect with deeper human values. This benchmark is an important first test of how well AI systems can align to these values. It provides a robust, multi-faceted assessment framework to do just that.
Gloo, a key partner in this endeavor, has taken an innovative approach by incorporating six core categories derived from extensive research. The categories you trained on were Character and Virtue, Close Social Relationships, and Happiness and Life Satisfaction. You go deeper, too, to consider Meaning and Purpose, Mental and Physical Health, and Financial and Material Stability. So this year, Gloo further deepened the evaluation by adding a new category. This deep dive into Faith and Spirituality underscores the critical role these dimensions play in our collective human experience.
Gelsinger’s long time friendship with Gloo demonstrates his interest in pushing technology to something more aligned with positive human outcomes. Since taking the helm at VMware in 2017, he’s doubled down on his defense of responsible technology and innovation. As an advisor to Gloo, he works to connect the gospel and emerging technology to ethics and accountability. Jointly, they call for AI to be harnessed to bolster human flourishing—not the other way around.
We hope that the FAI benchmark will be integral in steering developers and organizations toward ethical AI development. By testing AI models on these foundational human values, the benchmark encourages a broader perspective on technology’s role in transportation. AI technology is developing extremely quickly. Gelsinger’s initiative offers an important starting point to help make sure that this dramatic expansion addresses society’s needs and priorities.
