Amazon has just debuted a new web platform designed to make its popular AI assistant, Alexa+, even more useful. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the company dropped another bombshell that has caused fans and developers to be ecstatic. This milestone is significant as it demonstrates their ambitious plans to improve their industry-leading voice-controlled technology. After a short private beta, the new website is now opening up for all Alexa+ Early Access customers. They can begin discovering how to engage with the assistant virtually!

Since the launch, reactions have been keenly divided, with users taking to social media to proclaim their enthusiasm and fears. Over 3 million users have quickly gotten accustomed to Alexa+’s variety of new features. Anecdotally, complaints about misfires and mistakes have emerged on social media and online forums. Yet, despite these shortcomings, owners of Alexa+ data indicates customers are already starting to trust Alexa+ for more complex tasks.

We heard from Daniel Rausch, Vice President of Alexa and Echo at Amazon, who provided a behind-the-scenes look at the platform’s performance and user engagement. Most remarkably, he noticed that a whopping 76% of Alexa+’s features are found nowhere else on the service. None of the other AIs come even close to having the specific, unparalleled functionality it provides. This statistic underscores Alexa+’s uniqueness in the wider AI marketplace.

Early users are already telling us they’re seeing a threefold increase in shopping activity through Alexa+. This new wave suggests that the AI helper is evolving into an essential resource for making purchases online. On top of that, customers are using recipe features five times more than before, highlighting the assistant’s place in meal prep. Rausch emphasized the significance of these unique interactions, stating, “One, because customers count on Alexa to do unique things. You know, you can send a photograph of an old family recipe to Alexa and then talk through the recipe as you’re cooking it in your kitchen, substitute ingredients for what you have around the home, and get the job all the way done.”

Heavy smart home users are already adopting Alexa+ in droves. They tell us they’re using it 50% more just to keep track of their devices than in the original version of Alexa. Consumers are readily pouring money into smart home technology. Our recent sales trend reflects that they are finding a lot of value in the increased capabilities that come along with the new assistant.

Meanwhile, the new Alexa app is all about making chat conversations better. Rausch pointed out that these community interactions have always overshadowed more useful features. This move to conversational engagement is indicative of a growing consumer demand for more human-like interactions with technology. Users will be able to participate in spirited debates with Alexa+. The app takes this experience even further through simple but powerful guidance on advanced topics, content development, and even trip planning.

At least among the current users, there’s still a lot of chatter about all the mistakes, as Alexa+ gets things wrong most of the time. Rausch thinks that these complaints are an outsized glimpse into the broader user experience. He suspects that a large share of users are wild about the quirks Alexa+ possesses. They rely on it to perform functions that go far beyond the foundational features.
