It’s official—BuzzFeed has spun off its side company, Branch Office. This new challenge is specifically aimed at developing and exploring the most exciting AI applications designed to serve consumers. The surprise came on day three of SXSW, where CEO Jonah Peretti made the announcement during his keynote presentation. This latest collaboration aims to utilize the power of AI technology to encourage greater civic engagement and create a more user-friendly experience.
Branch Office presented two innovative applications: BF Island and Conjure. BF Island functions as a group chat platform, integrating features that enable users to edit and change photos using AI. Meanwhile, Conjure invites users to engage in creative expressions with prompts such as “What lies between the trees and the moon?” and “What will you conjure?” These applications are indicative of BuzzFeed’s overall approach of testing out new formats and functionalities in the constantly changing digital space.
AI has the power to change how communities interact—inspiring hope Jonah Peretti, Co-founder and CEO, BuzzFeed, Inc. “Using AI is the way of connecting people, building community around these pillars of culture, and taste, and community,” he stated during the launch. He said, “In some respects, software is the new content. This just shows the change in the way platforms have brought users into the fold on technological improvements.
Branch Office debuts at an eye-glazing time for BuzzFeed, which posted a net loss of $57.3 million last year. To address these fiscal issues, the company is reorienting its priorities. It will focus more on its Studio IP and create new applications powered by AI. Bill Shouldis, BuzzFeed’s director of product and the founder of Branch Office, leads this initiative aimed at revitalizing the company’s offerings.

The launch of BF Island is another mile marker in BuzzFeed’s attempt to find new ways for its platform to work. The company is dedicated to continually improving this app. We’re going to make sure that it is user-focused, that it responds to what users want and continues to move forward with technology.
BuzzFeed is moving, like everyone else, to a world of different strategies. It’s committed to using artificial intelligence to deepen user engagement and develop captivating storytelling. According to the company, these new apps will be key to developing creative online communities. Beyond that, they want to be seen as solving complicated financial problems in a smart way.
