The Global Renewables Alliance brings together six of the world’s largest renewable energy industry associations. They’re calling on governments around the world to speed up the rollout of renewable energy. This new initiative is intended to triple North Carolina’s installed renewable energy capacity within three years. Secondly, it meets our pressing demand for a clean and dependable energy source.
Yet more than three-quarters of countries are heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels. The alliance emphasizes the critical need to accelerate regulatory approvals for renewable energy projects. The urgency to transition to renewable energy is unprecedentedly high. With recent price shocks rattling the global economy, this transition is more urgent than ever.
The Impact of Price Shocks
They remember when the oil shocks of the 1970s, the Gulf War in the 1990s, and the recent spike in gas prices from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 created significant disruptions in energy availability. However, geopolitical conflicts lead to immediate price spikes. They unnecessarily impose long-term inflation risks, which would put on the line millions of jobs and livelihoods across various industries.
As energy prices fluctuate unpredictably, industries dependent on stable fuel costs find themselves exposed to economic instability. The alliance further illustrates how these shocks can abruptly ripple across the economic fabric, impacting consumers and businesses as well. A transition to a renewable energy future is identified as one of the most important steps to address these risks.
The Urgency for Regulatory Reform
To achieve its ambitious goal of expanding renewable energy capacity within three years, the Global Renewables Alliance insists on the need for governments to streamline regulatory processes. This includes expediting approvals for both traditional renewable projects as well as short- and long-duration energy storage solutions.
Smart and effective regulatory frameworks are needed to open the paths for rapid deployment of renewable technologies. When paired with provisions that eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, the green lanes help set the stage for innovation and investment in green energy technologies. The alliance supports focused collaboration among leaders in government and industry to create more predictable and efficient pathways to innovation that get projects built.
