In a brilliant display of imagination and STEM prowess, 450 primary school children came together on the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) Culdrose base at Helston. Together, they collaborated for the Lego League Regional Final. Participants really jumped into this archaeology-themed experience. They raced to create and program Lego robots to complete multiple missions on a competition game table.
Students from various area schools competed with great enthusiasm, showcasing their engineering talent with the robots they built. Every mission required original thinking and concerted, vigorous problem-solving abilities. Students creatively problem solved through the seeming obstacles of the egg drop featured on the game table.
Mr. Blight, the secretary of Porthleven School, which took part, stressed the educational importance of the event. She noted, “It really builds on their STEM learning, they get to do a lot of coding and a lot of teamwork.” This was a theme not just from the staff but from participants who really enjoyed the mix of light-heartedness and education.
Elowyn, a student who participated in the congressional competition, shared her enthusiasm with us. “It’s a great experience for kids our age because you’re learning and still having fun.” Participants all expressed similar sentiments, underscoring how hands-on activities such as these are instrumental in creating a newfound excitement for careers in science and technology.
George Thorpe, from the South West region, similarly highlighted the need to smash through barriers and keep going even when things get tough. “The robots are not perfect, they will go wrong and they do go wrong, but the children get through that and persevere,” he stated. He added, “It’s really great to see the potential naval engineers of the future having loads of fun, getting engaged in this sort of activity and doing some really impressive coding.”
Cooperation and camaraderie was in full force during the entire event as students worked together to solve problems and improve their robot designs. The supportive, collaborative environment created an experience that built strong friendships and foundational skills, helping prepare students for more challenging academic courses ahead.
The Lego League Regional Final was a massive accomplishment! It combined education and entertainment, motivating fellows to seek out further experiences in STEM fields. Through the thoughtful planning of this event’s creative organizers, all of the children were given opportunities to be stars, sending wonderful memories home with everyone in attendance.
