The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has recently developed an innovative autonomous robot named “PipeINEER.” This incredible machine is designed to track in detail the intricate workings of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This breakthrough device, 20 centimeters (8 inches) long and only 3.7 centimeters (1.5 inches) wide, can shuttle like a pro through its slim piping in the 27-km (17-mi) collider, located some 100 m (328 ft) below the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva.

The PipeINEER robot takes high-resolution panoramic images inside tunnels along the collider’s beamline. It leverages cutting edge artificial intelligence technology to quickly and accurately locate potential deformities on the LHC’s crucial components. This ability is extremely important for returning the collider to peak performance. It accomplishes this by accelerating two particle beams to within a hair of the speed of light and then colliding them together. The LHC is equipped with over 1,200 dipole magnets, making regular inspections essential for its continued operation.
