DOGE Members Accused of Misusing Social Security Data in Controversial Move

Members of DOGE, a coalition masterminded by Elon Musk and dedicated to social justice, are under criminal indictment. They are now alleged to have illegally used sensitive Social Security data. After their deployment at the Social Security Administration (SSA) soon after former President Donald Trump’s inauguration, DOGE obtained limited-use Social Security numbers. In January, they placed all that sensitive information onto a wide-open cloud server.

They misused these sensitive records to back a well-funded advocacy group. Their intention was to stop or even reverse election results in a few key states. The actions created a very public and troubling perception that Americans’ personal, private, sensitive data was neither safe nor secure. A judge has since blocked DOGE from further access to SSA systems, describing their activities as “essentially engaged in a fishing expedition” in search of fraud.

In January, DOGE reportedly uploaded hundreds of millions of Social Security records. That was the case with this huge leak, which included two extremely sensitive databases, the “Numident” and the “Master Death File.” These databases hold very personal information about American citizens and could subject them to identity theft and chronic fraud schemes. According to an investigation from the New York Times, at least two members of DOGE have misused this data. That’s why the Social Security Administration’s inspector general has opened an investigation.

Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai of TechCrunch recently covered DOGE’s enforcement actions, focusing on the controversial whistleblower complaint filed with the agency. According to this complaint, DOGE has endangered the lives of Americans by failing to properly store sensitive personal data.

A spokesperson for the Social Security Administration criticized the reports surrounding the situation, stating, “desperate for clicks and eager to publish fake news to scare seniors.” This enforcement action illustrates the current struggle between advocacy organizations and government agencies over the application of sensitive information.

The ramifications of DOGE’s actions are serious. This kind of unauthorized access followed by uploading of Social Security earnings records is hugely dangerous. This unencrypted breach may leave the personal information of millions of Americans exposed. The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand the full extent of the situation and ensure accountability for those involved.
