City Detect, a San Francisco-based startup, uses vision AI to empower local governments to keep buildings and neighborhoods healthy. They’ve done even better with their $13 million Series A funding round, led by Prudence Venture Capital. This latest round marks the company’s total funding up to $15 million since launching in 2021.
Founded to address urban decay and safety concerns, City Detect operates in at least 17 cities, including major metropolitan areas such as Dallas and Miami. The company’s cutting edge technology allows it to track thousands of buildings across the country each week. This method greatly exceeds the average human ability, which is only able to process 50 buildings per week.
Gavin Baum-Blake, the CEO of City Detect, emphasized the capabilities of their technology, stating, “We’re able to see if there’s structural roof issues or we’re able to identify if there’s been storm damage.” This state-of-the-art detection system doesn’t just improve safety though it helps to ensure continued compliance with local code as well.
City Detect is designed to work just like Google Maps Street View. In reality, it focuses mightily on achieving that buildings are up to code for life safety protection. The company’s AI-driven solutions enable local governments to respond proactively to issues such as blight, illegal dumping, and public health threats. Baum-Blake underscored that their technology has propelled tremendous efficiency gains in the departments they partner with, such as Public Works. This advancement allows for more timely resolution of issues and allows citations to be avoided.
The startup is equally committed to promoting responsible AI practices. Baum-Blake explained, “We published our Responsible AI policy in response to a consortium of local governments that stated they were looking for clarity on what vendors were actually willing to commit to.” He added, “We committed to this policy so that our local government partners could know what to expect from us.” Protecting your data City Detect is now SOC 2 Type II compliant, so you know your information is stored at the highest level of data security and privacy.
City Detect’s joining the GovAI Coalition is a testament to its commitment to the pursuit of strengthening collaboration between technological and governmental partners. Cities are hungry for new, cutting edge solutions to help them address pressing public challenges. In this growing movement, City Detect is emerging as an indispensable partner committed to protecting people with safe and clean environments.
City Detect will host an event from October 13-15, 2026, aimed at showcasing its technology and fostering discussions on urban safety and AI integration.
