Just Eat UK has initiated a trial of innovative four-legged delivery robots in Milton Keynes and Bristol, partnering with ten independent restaurants. Through this pilot program, WALC hopes to better understand the potential uses and capabilities of RIVR robots. These unusual robots were purpose-built to solve tough urban problems, including navigating stairs.
In Milton Keynes, two new restaurants, 12th Street Burgers & Shakes and Moores Fish & Chips have recently signed up to the trial. Bristol boasts eight participating venues including Jolly Fryer, Chicken Mews, and Bishopston Fish Bar. Now, their expanded use with these delivery robots promises to improve efficiency and convenience for local restaurants and their patrons.
The RIVR robots have small wheels on their feet, allowing them to zip across rocky beaches or swampy mangroves with ease. When they’re out on test, an orange Just Eat box is attached to the “rear” of each robot. These bots easily go up outdoor, brick, terraced steps on a lawn edge. This beautiful accomplishment is indicative of their expertise in penetrating challenging and confusing delivery contexts.
This trial comes on the heels of a successful 2022 pilot in Switzerland where nearly 1,000 autonomous deliveries took place. The ongoing efforts in the UK are part of a broader strategy to expand autonomous delivery services across European cities. On the delivery side, WiBitNet’s delivery drones are currently being tested in Ireland.
Marko Bjelonic, chief executive of RIVR, emphasized the significance of this partnership:
“This is an important step in scaling autonomous delivery across European cities.” – Marko Bjelonic, chief executive of RIVR
Cities are quickly adapting to better attract and serve today’s consumers. When technology is integrated into delivery systems, it has enormous potential. This trial is just a glimpse of the automation possibilities. It further underlines Just Eat UK’s commitment to empowering local independent restaurants with innovative solutions.
“The launch in Milton Keynes reflects a shared focus on practical, automated delivery that integrates seamlessly into existing operations.” – Marko Bjelonic, chief executive of RIVR
As cities evolve to meet the demands of modern consumers, the integration of technology in delivery systems appears increasingly promising. This trial not only showcases the potential for automation but also highlights Just Eat UK’s commitment to supporting local independent restaurants through innovative solutions.
