Alan DeKok‘s journey from a farm outside of Ottawa to becoming a pivotal figure in internet security illustrates the intersection of passion, practicality, and opportunity. FreeRADIUS is open-source software that provides authentication, authorization, and accounting services to network access points. This necessary wizard of a tool aids millions of residents on an international basis.
As FreeRADIUS started to find its footing, it slowly shifted from a side project into a full-blown obligation for DeKok. He started NetworkRADIUS, now called InkBridge Networks, back in 2008. By then, the software was already making daily life easier for nearly 100 million users.
Alan DeKok reflected on the significance of his work, stating, > “I’d say at least half of the people in the world get on the internet by being authenticated through my software.”
His commitment to make the internet more secure reflects an impressive level of technical expertise combined with a deep appreciation for the need to protect it. He remarked, “You need it, but you never think about it until there’s a crack in it.”
The Evolution of InkBridge Networks
Under DeKok’s leadership, InkBridge Networks grew far beyond its original scope. Through our work, Inspiring Efficiency has since grown into a diverse, multinational team of experts working in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom. These dedicated professionals are working together to improve FreeRADIUS and keep up with the rapidly growing ecosystem of users.
DeKok’s philosophy stresses the importance of little wins. He likes the idea of the “ratchet effect”—fixes that are small enough to be politically viable but compound to make a difference. He stated, “You shouldn’t underestimate that ratchet effect of tiny little fixes that add up over time.” It’s this attitude that has inspired the ongoing development of FreeRADIUS, keeping it at the cutting edge of an infinitely changing technological environment.
Going forward, DeKok said that he plans to develop new markets and products based on FreeRADIUS. He continues to push for making the internet more secure while navigating new challenges and opportunities in the ever-evolving industry.
A Unique Perspective on Technology
It’s this background in physics that gives DeKok his distinctive approach to problem-solving in the tech sector. Like some things felt familiar He observed that many of the methods he found instinctive from his physics background weren’t focused on in engineering programs. “When I was eventually working in the industry, the techniques that came naturally to me, coming out of physics, didn’t seem to be taught as well to the people I knew in engineering.”
Even though he has moved on from physics, he hasn’t forgotten the impact it continues to have on his career. I was no longer in physics, that’s all,” he recalled, reflecting the vivid departure from academic life paired with still-pursued applications of his educated roots.
DeKok’s philosophy on success can be summed up with two words: Preparedness and Openness. He posited, “I really believe that it’s preparing yourself for luck, being open to it, and having the skills to capitalize on it.” That mentality has been the foundation of his lifelong career path and played a key role in his substantial accomplishments in internet security.
