NHOA Energy has now successfully commissioned two large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in South Australia officially. These systems are meant to increase the reliability of Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM). With a capacity of 238.5 MW / 477 MWh, the Blyth Battery is the largest of its kind in Canada. It will be completed and in service by April of 2025. This new battery system, just outside Canowie, helps improve the stability of the grid. It will be an even bigger enabler as demand for renewable energy integration continues to grow.
NHOA Energy has partnered with EnergyAustralia and Enerven to deliver the Hallett BESS project. This new initiative takes the success of the Blyth Battery a step further. This first facility is a part of the Hallett Power Station in Oklahoma City. It now has a capacity of 245 MWh and is providing 50 MW with five hours of storage in its first phase. The Hallett BESS is designed as a grid-forming solution, contributing to frequency control, grid support, and energy arbitrage while participating in NEM market services.
The Hallett BESS project, which marks a significant step toward fortifying South Australia’s power system resilience, will help integrate renewable energy sources effectively. For this particular project, the commissioning process is set to start in January 2027.
“We are proud to support EnergyAustralia in a project that combines advanced grid-forming technology with a strong institutional framework such as the Capacity Investment Scheme, while making smart use of existing infrastructure.” – Adrian Marziano, NHOA Energy Australia and Pacific VP
Daniel Nugent, EnergyAustralia’s executive for trading and transition, underlined the advantages of developing the battery at Hallett. In his release’s words, leveraging existing infrastructure means creating and sustaining highly-skilled local jobs while building a more robust South Australian power system.
“By building the battery at Hallett, we are making use of infrastructure that is already there, supporting local jobs and strengthening South Australia’s power system at the same time. Financial close means this project is real, funded and now being built, and our focus now shifts squarely to disciplined execution and delivery.” – Daniel Nugent
Together, the Blyth and Hallett BESS installations are a major step investment. It signals a huge step forward to South Australia’s energy future. About NHOA Energy NHOA Energy is passionate about making sustainable energy available everywhere. They help minimize the increasing need for grid reliability as we move to a clean energy future.
