NHOA Energy has partnered with EnergyAustralia and Enerven to implement one of the most innovative battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects. This creative and transformative initiative is anchored in Hallett, South Australia. This cutting-edge system has a capacity of 245 megawatt-hours (MWh) and is located nearby — just eight kilometers from the town of Canowie. The project is designed to increase grid stability across the entire National Electricity Market (NEM). With this initiative, managing energy use more effectively has taken a big step forward across the region.
The BESS has been purposely planned as a grid-forming solution that will play an active role in frequency control and providing other foundational grid support. It uses this capacity to directly engage in energy arbitrage and NEM market services. This engagement helps the resilience of South Australia’s diverse power system and enables a renewable-powered future.
Commissioning for the Hallett BESS is scheduled to start in January 2027. Initially, the system will offer 50 megawatts with five hours of storage, which will evolve as the system comes online. NHOA Energy is dedicated to building the best energy infrastructure in the region. The plant would be a significant addition coming on the heels of their announcement about their Blyth Battery, a 238.5MW/477MWh capacity, which is scheduled to be commissioned in April 2025.
The launch event took place at the Hallett Power Station. This site was chosen in part due to its current infrastructure’s ability to provide local jobs and bolstering South Australia’s transmission network. What’s more, EnergyAustralia’s trading and transition executive Daniel Nugent is a vocal advocate for the project. He underscored its focus on leveraging previously-built infrastructure and generating new career pathways.
“By building the battery at Hallett, we are making use of infrastructure that is already there, supporting local jobs and strengthening South Australia’s power system at the same time. Financial close means this project is real, funded and now being built, and our focus now shifts squarely to disciplined execution and delivery.” – Daniel Nugent, EnergyAustralia trading and transition executive
Adrian Marziano, NHOA Energy Australia and Pacific Vice President, further supported this sentiment, emphasizing the project’s innovative approach.
“We are proud to support EnergyAustralia in a project that combines advanced grid-forming technology with a strong institutional framework such as the Capacity Investment Scheme, while making smart use of existing infrastructure.” – Adrian Marziano, NHOA Energy Australia and Pacific VP
The partnership between NHOA Energy, EnergyAustralia, and Enerven exemplifies a long-term solution in minimizing the impact of the existing energy crisis across South Australia. This terrific project will combine cutting-edge technology with historical data. Beyond advancing clean mobility, it will no doubt strengthen the entire region’s energy landscape and help catalyze a more sustainable, equitable future.
