Four-Legged Delivery Robots Set to Transform Urban Logistics

These new delivery robots, made to traverse the complexities of city landscapes, have begun to be tested for real in cities across the globe. Just Eat UK has partnered with RIVR to trial some of the coolest four-legged robots on the planet. Not only can these robots climb stairs, their modular design makes them ideal for any delivery situation.

RIVR Robots are roaming the streets of Milton Keynes and Bristol. They want to ensure that local independent restaurants are well represented in delivery services operating in various communities. In Milton Keynes, current members include 12th Street Burgers & Shakes and Moores Fish & Chips. At the same time, Bristol is home to eight other restaurants — Jolly Fryer, Chicken Mews, Bishopston Fish Bar, among others.

These parameter trials follow the successful completion of almost 1,000 autonomous deliveries in Switzerland, demonstrating the robots’ capabilities. The design features four legs, each one decked out with a series of tiny wheels. This configuration allows RIVR robots to gracefully conquer deep urban stressors.

Marko Bjelonic, the Chief Executive of RIVR, said of their partnership with Just Eat UK, “This is a very important partnership for us. He stated that it represents “an important step in scaling autonomous delivery across European cities.” Overall, this initiative seeks to deliver a truly viable, through automated delivery, solution that can easily fit into current restaurant processes.

As the trial continues, the bots will begin to be used to transport boxes. They’ll even be bringing along the signature orange Just Eat packaging and promise on-time deliveries. They’re much easier to move across different types of surfaces and up stairs. Their unique capability sets them apart from more conventional delivery methods and marks a significant advancement in logistics technology.

The RIVR robots aren’t the only ones testing this summer. Delivery drones are making their debut – this time in Ireland – underscoring the increasingly common push toward automation in food delivery service. Taken together, these innovations point to an exciting future of the consumer order fulfillment landscape in cities.

All in all, the RIVR robot trials signal an important development in the future of delivery. Recent innovations in technology have massively transformed the food delivery industry. Substantial changes like these will be driven by cooperation with far reaching stakeholders, such as our partnership with Just Eat UK.
