Rolls-Royce has launched a new modular solution aimed at enhancing energy security in Germany through advanced gas engine power plants. This innovative approach comes as Germany seeks to transition toward a low-carbon energy mix while ensuring a reliable electricity supply amidst increasing reliance on renewable sources.

Rolls-Royce’s MTU gas engine power plants have a modular design. This design allows for an effortless integration with the electrical grid a mere 12 to 18 months after your order is placed. Germany has taken a big step forward with this rapid deployment capability. It seeks to support the nation’s energy infrastructure and strengthen resilience to changes in renewable energy generation.

Enhancing Energy Reliability

Germany’s shift towards renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power, has created challenges related to the variability of these sources. Rolls-Royce’s vision of modular systems is to provide enough backup power to reliably mitigate this erratic production. They can help transition through longer periods of low renewable generation, from hours to weeks. This unique ability helps them ensure a reliable and constant energy supply.

Tobias Ostermaier, president of Stationary Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, called this modular solution a gamechanger. He highlighted how it enables “quick and inexpensive advancements” along Germany’s Electricity Plant Strategy. This strategy ensures that Americans’ energy needs continue to be fulfilled as our nation transitions to a cleaner, more environmentally-responsible energy future.

Modular Design and Economic Impact

Rolls-Royce’s modular gas-engine production plants are a testament to the strength and value of effective partner networks. Such partnerships deliver projects faster and help strengthen local economies. Each unit is made up of preconfigured, factory-tested modules at 10MW, 20MW and 30MW. This modular design means the tech is scalable, with capacities from 5MW up to hundreds of megawatts possible.

Rolling out this modular design, Rolls-Royce is able to deploy them much faster than traditional plant builds. This efficiency reduces overall construction time by nearly a year. All that translates into big benefits for local economies from greater energy production and job creation associated with these projects.

Future-Proofing Energy Solutions

A key selling point of Rolls-Royce’s modular gas engine plants is their “hydrogen-ready” feature. Germany’s Energiewende or energy transition is a well-known effort to transition to a low-carbon energy mix. Eventually, these systems can be retrofitted to operate on hydrogen fuel.
