Robotic Surgery Marks New Era for Patients at QEQM Hospital

In a groundbreaking development, patients at the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM) in Kent have successfully undergone robotic surgery for the first time. Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon Sudhaker Mangam spearheads pioneering techniques that improve surgical success. These techniques speed up recovery times for patients.

Mandy Lee, 68 from Herne Bay was determined to fight bowel cancer. She had an operation to remove part of her bowel that Thursday. Unsurprisingly, Lee was a bit intimidated at the outset. Soon, he was comforted by the medical staff’s skill and the robot’s history of success elsewhere in Europe.

The team was incredibly adept at making all this understandable. They promised me that this would be less painful than doing a bigger surgery with more invasiveness, and I needed that to be true. Lee said, looking back on her hard choice to move forward.

The robotic surgical system includes four articulated arms that the surgeon controls from a distance. It provides a detailed, three-dimensional look from within the patient’s body. This innovative technology provides enhanced visualization and greater accuracy during procedures. By Sunday, only days after her surgery, Lee was back home and still improving each day.

34 Stanley Russell, at age 53, was able to become the second patient to enjoy the advantages of robotic surgery at QEQM. Like Lee, he appreciated all the detailed explanations from the surgical staff.

“It was a bit of a scary thought, I hadn’t even considered the possibility of robotic surgery, but I just wanted the cancer gone and I wasn’t put off,” Lee remarked, underscoring her determination to overcome her health challenges.

Sudhaker Mangam highlighted the significance of this advancement, stating, “This marks a major advancement in surgical capability for east Kent patients, enabling greater precision, improved outcomes, and faster recovery times.” His statements highlight the even bigger impact that robotic surgery has made in improving patient outcomes across the area.

Parallel to this technology moving into practice, at QEQM it’s becoming quite revolutionary. In doing so, patients and health care providers will experience better surgical care. This landmark adoption of robotic procedures is just the beginning, setting the stage for more sophisticated treatments to come in the future.
