Alight also recently announced its acquisition of two large-scale solar projects from Finnish developer 3Flash. This is an important milestone in Alight’s global renewable energy journey and another step in the growing footprint Alight has established in Finland. The acquisition strengthens Alight’s renewable energy portfolio, adding more than 200 megawatts (MW) of planned utility-scale solar capacity along with energy storage. This decision bolsters their commitment to make the region more energy-independent and resilient through a decentralized grid.
The first project we purchased will be about 75MW capacity. Connection to the grid by 2028 is our goal. This project will greatly benefit from its proximity to the heart of Fingrid’s network — a key component for the most efficient and cost-effective energy distribution. Approval has been received to develop a 30MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at the original project site. This addition is huge and will really allow the project to straddle many more capabilities.
The second project from the acquisition, also located in North Carolina, is expected to generate around 150MW of solar power. It must connect to the grid through an already-planned expansion of a new substation by Fingrid, with completion expected circa 2030. Both of the projects take place in eastern Finland. This area boasts some of the lowest local power production in the country and some of the least congestion on our power grid, rendering it ideal for developing expansive renewable power projects.
Alight and 3Flash will work together to advance these projects until they are shovel-ready. Suitably enough, Alight is preparing to open its first Finnish solar park at Eurajoki. Once built, this new facility will be among the largest in the world, with a massive 100MW capacity. This park marks the biggest development milestone for Alight, proving its long-term strategic investment in the rapidly evolving renewable energy landscape in Finland.
Alight CEO Warren Campbell called attention to the need for local solar and storage solutions.
“By adding local solar and storage, we strengthen energy self-sufficiency and increase grid resilience in eastern Finland. With its strong solar conditions and available grid capacity, the region is an ideal location for new large-scale projects.” – Warren Campbell, Alight CEO
Moreover, Alight and 3Flash are jointly developing another substantial solar park in Loviisa, southern Finland, which will have a capacity of approximately 120MW and include a 45MW BESS. This joint development initiative further underscores HELEN and Enphase’s deep shared commitment to accelerating the proliferation of grid-friendly, decentralized solar- and storage-powered solutions throughout Finland.
CEO at 3Flash, Miko Huomo carried this excitement about the partnership with Alight.
“We are very pleased to expand our cooperation with Alight through these projects. Together we are accelerating the build-out of grid-friendly solar and storage solutions in Finland.” – Miko Huomo, 3Flash CEO
