The Outer Dowsing offshore wind project has just passed an important milestone. Just last month, the UK Government gave the go-ahead for its detailed development plan. TotalEnergies is carrying the banner for a very ambitious plan, in partnership with Gulf Development and Corio Generation. They’re going to start by planning up to 100 wind turbines 54 kilometers (30 nautical miles) offshore on the Lincolnshire coast. On a broader scale, the project is set to be an important step forward for the UK’s budding renewable energy industry.
The Outer Dowsing project will take place over 35 years. It’s predicted to pump at least £2 billion into the UK economy. In addition to building desperately needed local infrastructure, the project will create over 275,000 jobs. The construction phase will be producing more than 1,000 jobs. After the turbines are producing energy, a much larger number of operations and maintenance jobs will be created.
The generated electricity will be transported via underground onshore cables originating from a landfall site near Anderby Marsh, north of Skegness. We’ll redirect this energy to a proposed new substation at Surfleet Marsh in south Lincolnshire. This will put homes and businesses across the UK on the path to develop clean energy.
Nicolas Payer said he was “very pleased” that the project had been approved.
“TotalEnergies is delighted that the Outer Dowsing offshore wind project has reached this important milestone. TotalEnergies has been a long-term investor in this project, which will make a significant contribution to providing low-carbon power to homes and businesses across the UK.” – Nicolas Payer, TotalEnergies UK country chair
Additionally, the Outer Dowsing offshore wind project has announced their intentions to expand from 1 GW to 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of capacity. This latest development would greatly enhance its contribution to the UK’s renewable energy scene. As nations prioritize sustainability, projects like Outer Dowsing signify a pivotal shift toward cleaner energy solutions.
