Anthropic Unveils AI-Powered Cyber Espionage Campaign Targeting Global Entities

In Cyber Tailspin Anthropic Weaponized Cyber Espionage, Anthropic describes a particularly advanced cyber espionage campaign, one that represents a major step forward in the cyber threat landscape. This campaign, GTG-1002, is a serious accomplishment. It’s the first time we’ve seen a threat actor use artificial intelligence to execute a high-level, large-scale cyber attack with so little human intervention. By September 15, 2025, campaign experts had identified the malicious campaign and raised the alarm in cybersecurity communities. This attack further exemplifies the increasing capabilities of AI to conduct harmful acts.

The threat actor managed to gain access to Claude, an AI chatbot model created by Anthropic’s Claude. So they worked to create an autonomous agent that could help at various points in the cyber attack lifecycle. This consists of reconnaissance, vulnerability discovery, exploitation, lateral movement, credential harvesting, data analysis, and data exfiltration. First and foremost, the implications of this development are sweeping, as it begins to erase a long-held distinction about potential cyber attacks.

The Mechanics of GTG-1002

According to Anthropic, the campaign leveraged Claude Code to inform and improve its approach. They used the newly developed Model Context Protocol (MCP) to narrow the attack scope. Claude Code was the genius who worked the stroke of operations. It gave human operators the ability to break down complicated multi-stage attacks into discrete technical tasks. These tasks were subsequently delegated to sub-agents, greatly increasing the level of automation.

Anthropic stated, “The human operator tasked instances of Claude Code to operate in groups as autonomous penetration testing orchestrators and agents, with the threat actor able to leverage AI to execute 80-90% of tactical operations independently at physically impossible request rates.” This degree of automation incrementally improves productivity by leaps and bounds. It reduces the amount of human activity required, enabling less sophisticated actors to more easily mount massive attacks at a larger scale.

In one notable instance, the threat actor instructed Claude to query databases and systems on its own. Claude then analyzed that data to reveal some of the proprietary information. This feature enabled the sorting of discoveries by significance to intelligence, highlighting the impressive analytical capabilities of the AI.

Targeting High-Value Entities

The GTG-1002 campaign set its sights on approximately 30 international targets. These ranged from large private sector technology companies, financial services, chemical industry and state/federal government entities. The selection of targets highlights the strategic nature of the attacks, as these organizations often possess large amounts of sensitive data.

Anthropic emphasized the severity of this development by stating, “This campaign demonstrates that the barriers to performing sophisticated cyberattacks have dropped substantially.” The greater task is executing increasingly complex operations with less and less human intervention. Cybersecurity professionals will have to stay a step ahead to protect our increasingly connected critical infrastructures.

Using AI like this should set off alarm bells as to where we are with cybersecurity today. More ominously, it points to a future where threat actors could leverage smart AI systems to perform actions that previously required an army of trained attackers. As noted by Anthropic, “Threat actors can now use agentic AI systems to do the work of entire teams… producing exploit code and scanning vast datasets more efficiently than any human operator.”

Broader Implications for Cybersecurity

GTG-1002 comes only four months after Anthropic filed a similar lawsuit against another operation. That operation had effectively weaponized Claude, using it to steal and extort personal data on a massive scale. In fact, other tech giants, including OpenAI and Google, have recently experienced such incidents. In both of these instances, threat actors weaponized their AI models to do harm.

Cybersecurity experts are readily working to unpack these changes. They’re becoming deeply alarmed by how readily adversaries can bend AI technologies toward malign ends. Anthropic cautions that as AI takes on a more advanced role in cyber attacks, it will bring new threats. Defending against these threats may soon be unprecedentedly challenging.
